The coatimundi belongs to the genus Nasua within the family Procyonidae, a group of New World carnivores that also includes raccoons, ringtails, kinkajous, and olingos. Two species are widely recognized: the white-nosed coati, Nasua narica, which ranges from the southwestern United States through Mexico and Central America into northwestern Colombia, and the South American coati, Nasua nasua, which occupies a vast range from Colombia and Venezuela southward through Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. A third species, the mountain coati, Nasuella olivacea, is sometimes discussed alongside the Nasua species but belongs to a separate genus and occupies a more restricted range in the Andean cloud forests. Together, these animals represent one of the most ecologically versatile lineages within the Procyonidae.
The geographic range of the coatimundi spans an extraordinary diversity of habitats. White-nosed coatis in the southwestern United States inhabit rocky canyons, oak woodlands, and riparian corridors in southern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and the Big Bend region of Texas. Moving southward through Mexico and Central America, the species occupies tropical dry forests, humid lowland rainforests, mangrove edges, and montane cloud forests at elevations exceeding eight thousand feet. The South American coati occupies an equally varied set of habitats across its continental range, from the dense Amazon basin rainforest to the dry scrublands of the Gran Chaco, the Atlantic Forest remnants of southeastern Brazil, and the gallery forests of the Cerrado biome.
This habitat flexibility reflects the coatimundi's generalist foraging strategy. Coatis are omnivores with a pronounced emphasis on invertebrates and fruit, supplemented by small vertebrates such as lizards, frogs, and rodents, as well as bird eggs, carrion, and plant material including tubers and seeds. Their elongated, highly mobile snouts are specialized for probing leaf litter, soil, and rotting logs in search of beetle larvae, spiders, scorpions, and other arthropods. This combination of dietary breadth and physical adaptability has allowed the genus to persist across a wider range of elevations, moisture regimes, and vegetation types than almost any other procyonid.
The evolutionary origins of the Procyonidae are rooted in North America, with the family's fossil record extending back to the late Oligocene and early Miocene, roughly twenty to twenty-five million years ago. The genus Nasua is believed to have diverged from other procyonid lineages during the Miocene, and the Great American Biotic Interchange during the Pliocene — approximately three million years ago — allowed coati ancestors to disperse into South America as the Isthmus of Panama formed. This dispersal event shaped the modern distribution of the two Nasua species and established the coatimundi as one of the most widespread carnivores in the Western Hemisphere.
