The Algerian Hedgehog, Atelerix algirus, is a member of the family Erinaceidae and one of the most widespread hedgehog species across the western Mediterranean basin. Its native range extends across the coastal and semi-arid regions of North Africa, encompassing modern-day Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and Libya, with populations also established in parts of the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, and segments of the southeastern coast of Spain and southern France. This distribution makes the Algerian Hedgehog one of the few African hedgehog species to maintain a natural foothold on the European continent, a biogeographic distinction that sets it apart from its close relatives in the genus Atelerix.
The species thrives in a variety of habitats across its range, favoring Mediterranean scrubland, open woodland, agricultural margins, and the edges of cultivated fields where ground cover provides shelter during daylight hours. It is also found in coastal dune systems, oasis environments in semi-arid zones, and the garden peripheries of urban and suburban areas. This habitat flexibility has been a key factor in the species' persistence across regions that have undergone extensive human modification over thousands of years. Unlike some hedgehog species that depend on undisturbed forest or grassland, the Algerian Hedgehog has demonstrated a capacity to exploit anthropogenic landscapes, foraging in orchards, olive groves, and irrigated gardens.
The presence of Atelerix algirus in southern Europe has been the subject of considerable biogeographic discussion. Some researchers have argued that European populations are relicts of a broader distribution that predates the formation of the Strait of Gibraltar, while others contend that the European populations represent ancient human-mediated introductions, possibly dating to the Phoenician or Roman periods when maritime trade connected North Africa with the Iberian Peninsula and the western Mediterranean islands. Genetic studies conducted in the early twenty-first century have provided partial resolution, suggesting that at least some European populations show genetic signatures consistent with introduction events rather than continuous natural dispersal, though the question remains open for certain island populations.
Regardless of the precise mechanism of its arrival in Europe, the Algerian Hedgehog's range reflects a deep evolutionary history shaped by the climatic oscillations of the Pleistocene. During glacial periods, North African habitats contracted and shifted, and hedgehog populations likely retreated to refugia in coastal and montane areas before reexpanding during warmer interglacial intervals. This dynamic history has contributed to the genetic diversity observed within the species today and has influenced the subtle morphological variation seen across different regional populations, including differences in spine coloration, body size, and facial patterning.
