The African Soft-Furred Rat, Mastomys natalensis, is one of the most abundant and widespread rodent species on the African continent. Its natural range spans nearly all of sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal and Ethiopia in the north to South Africa in the south, encompassing an enormous diversity of habitats including savannas, grasslands, agricultural fields, and the margins of human settlements. This extraordinary geographic reach has made it one of the most ecologically significant small mammals in Africa.
The species belongs to the genus Mastomys, a group of murid rodents sometimes referred to collectively as multimammate mice or multimammate rats due to the unusually high number of mammary glands found in females — typically eight to twelve pairs, compared to the five pairs common in most murid species. This anatomical feature enables large litter sizes, often exceeding ten pups per litter, and contributes to the species' remarkable reproductive capacity. The combination of rapid breeding, dietary flexibility, and habitat adaptability has allowed Mastomys natalensis to thrive across an astonishing range of environmental conditions.
Taxonomically, the genus Mastomys has undergone considerable revision over the past several decades. What was once treated as a single widespread species has been divided into multiple distinct species through chromosomal analysis and molecular phylogenetics. Mastomys natalensis, with a diploid chromosome number of 32, is now recognized as the most common and widespread member of the genus. Other species, including Mastomys coucha and Mastomys erythroleucus, occupy overlapping or adjacent ranges and are sometimes confused with M. natalensis in both scientific literature and the pet trade.
The species' common name, African Soft-Furred Rat, refers to its notably plush, velvety coat — a tactile quality that distinguishes it from many other small rodent species and contributes significantly to its appeal as a companion animal. The fur is typically tawny brown to grayish-brown on the dorsal surface, transitioning to a lighter cream or white on the underside, though selective breeding in captivity has produced a range of color variations.
