The African Dormouse belongs to the genus Graphiurus, a group of small nocturnal rodents endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. Unlike their European relatives in the family Gliridae, African dormice evolved in tropical and subtropical environments, occupying ecological niches across a vast geographic range that spans from the savannas of West Africa through the equatorial forests of Central Africa and into the woodlands and scrublands of eastern and southern Africa. This extensive distribution reflects the genus's remarkable adaptability to diverse habitats, from dense lowland rainforest to semi-arid bushveld and montane forest at elevations exceeding six thousand feet.
The genus Graphiurus contains approximately fourteen recognized species, though taxonomic revisions continue as genetic studies reveal previously unrecognized diversity within the group. The species most commonly encountered in captivity is Graphiurus murinus, the woodland dormouse, which ranges across much of southern and eastern Africa. Other species, including Graphiurus kelleni and Graphiurus lorraineus, occasionally appear in the exotic pet trade as well. The taxonomy of the genus has been challenging for researchers because many species are morphologically similar, differing primarily in subtle cranial measurements, dental characteristics, and genetic markers rather than in externally obvious features.
African dormice are arboreal or semi-arboreal animals that spend much of their active time in trees, shrubs, and dense vegetation. Their physical adaptations reflect this lifestyle: they possess broad, padded feet with semi-opposable digits that provide excellent grip on branches, large dark eyes adapted for nocturnal vision, and long, often bushy tails that aid in balance during climbing. Their small size — typically three to four inches in body length with a tail of similar length — allows them to exploit microhabitats within the canopy that larger mammals cannot access, including tree hollows, bird nests, and dense vine tangles.
The natural diet of African dormice is broadly omnivorous, encompassing insects, spiders, small vertebrates such as nestling birds and geckos, fruits, seeds, nectar, and plant sap. This dietary flexibility is a key factor in the genus's ecological success across such varied habitats. In some regions, African dormice play a notable role as pollinators, visiting flowers to feed on nectar and transferring pollen between plants in the process. Their predatory habits also position them as important regulators of insect populations within their ecosystems.
