Transporting White's Tree Frog safely requires advance preparation that accounts for the species' specific physiological needs and vulnerabilities. As an amphibian with permeable skin, Litoria caerulea is fundamentally more sensitive to environmental fluctuations during transport than most reptile species. The frog absorbs moisture, gases, and potentially harmful chemicals directly through its skin, which means that the choice of container materials, moisture sources, and environmental controls must be made with considerably more care than would be necessary for a similarly sized lizard or snake.
The ideal transport container for White's Tree Frog is a small, secure, well-ventilated plastic container with a tight-fitting lid that prevents escape while allowing adequate air exchange. Deli cups with ventilation holes punched or drilled into the lid are the industry standard for short-duration transport and are used by breeders, pet retailers, and shippers worldwide. The container should be large enough for the frog to turn around and assume a comfortable resting position but small enough to prevent the animal from being thrown around during movement. For an adult White's Tree Frog, a thirty-two-ounce deli cup is generally appropriate, while juveniles can be transported in sixteen-ounce containers.
Moisture management is the single most critical factor in amphibian transport. The container should be lined with damp, unbleached paper towels or damp sphagnum moss to maintain humidity without leaving standing water in which the frog could drown during jostling or tilting. The substrate should be damp to the touch but not soaking wet. Chlorinated tap water must be avoided, as chlorine and chloramine can be absorbed through the skin and cause irritation or toxicity. Dechlorinated water, spring water, or reverse-osmosis water should be used to dampen the substrate. A small section of crumpled, dampened paper towel placed in the container gives the frog something to grip and provides a sense of security by allowing the animal to tuck itself against a surface rather than sitting exposed.
Before the day of transport, the frog should be fasted for at least twenty-four hours. An empty digestive tract reduces the risk of regurgitation during the stress of travel and minimizes waste production inside the transport container. The frog should be well hydrated going into the transport period, as adequate hydration provides a physiological buffer against the mild dehydration that inevitably occurs during transit. A soaking session in shallow dechlorinated water the evening before transport allows the frog to absorb water through its ventral drink patch, a specialized area of highly permeable skin on the abdomen and inner thighs.
