Its range is concentrated along the western escarpment and adjacent coastal lowlands, a landscape shaped by the convergence of monsoon moisture from the Indian Ocean and the arid interior of the Arabian desert. Within this zone, the species occupies a surprising variety of microhabitats, from lush wadi valleys filled with tropical and subtropical vegetation to dry scrublands, agricultural margins, and even the gardens and hedgerows of urban areas. The species' common name derives from the tall, bony casque that crowns the head of both sexes, though it is markedly larger and more prominent in adult males, where it can reach heights of five centimeters or more. Researchers have proposed that it functions as a condensation surface in the species' fog-laden montane habitat, channeling moisture droplets toward the mouth, though this hypothesis remains debated. The geography of the Veiled Chameleon's homeland has shaped its biology in ways that have direct implications for its success in captivity. Yemen's western highlands receive significantly more rainfall than the country's interior, supporting vegetation belts that transition from semi-arid acacia woodland at lower elevations to dense montane forest and cloud forest above roughly 1,500 meters. The Veiled Chameleon navigates these gradients vertically, moving between sunlit perches for thermoregulation and shadier retreats to avoid overheating. This behavioral flexibility, combined with a tolerance for temperature swings that would stress many other chameleon species, is a key reason the Veiled Chameleon has proven far more adaptable in captive settings than its more environmentally sensitive congeners.
The species' diet in the wild reflects its opportunistic nature. While primarily insectivorous, feeding on a wide range of arthropods encountered along branches and foliage, the Veiled Chameleon is unusual among chameleons in its regular consumption of plant material.
