Car travel is the most practical and common method of transporting painted turtles, whether for veterinary visits, relocations, or trips to reptile shows. Because painted turtles are aquatic species, their transport requirements differ somewhat from those of terrestrial turtles. They should not be submerged in water during car travel, as sloshing water can cause stress and aspiration risk. Instead, a sturdy plastic container lined with damp towels or moistened sphagnum moss provides a secure, humid environment that keeps the turtle comfortable without the hazards of standing water.
The transport container should be ventilated but escape-proof, with a secure lid that allows airflow while preventing the turtle from climbing out. Painted turtles are more active and exploratory than box turtles and will attempt to escape from open containers, especially when stressed by the vibration and movement of a vehicle. A container just large enough for the turtle to turn around is ideal, as excessive space allows the animal to slide and collide with the walls during turns and stops.
Temperature management is essential during car travel. Painted turtles are ectotherms and are vulnerable to both overheating and chilling. Never place the transport container in direct sunlight or leave a turtle unattended in a parked vehicle. In hot weather, keeping the vehicle's air conditioning running and placing the container on the floor away from windows helps prevent dangerous temperature spikes. In cold weather, a chemical hand warmer wrapped in a towel and placed adjacent to the container provides gentle supplemental warmth.
For trips lasting more than a few hours, brief stops to check the turtle's condition and re-moisten the substrate are advisable. Most painted turtles will not eat during transport, so food is unnecessary for day trips. If the journey spans more than twenty-four hours, offering the turtle a brief soak in a shallow container of lukewarm water during a rest stop can help with hydration and waste elimination. Always verify that your destination state or province permits the possession of painted turtles before embarking on an interstate journey.
