Transporting a Hermann's Tortoise by car is the most common and generally the simplest method of travel. The key priority is maintaining a stable, comfortable temperature throughout the journey. Tortoises are ectothermic and rely on their environment for thermoregulation, so a car that is too hot, too cold, or subject to rapid temperature swings can cause significant stress or even health emergencies. Aim to keep the transport container in a part of the vehicle where temperatures remain between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
A sturdy, well-ventilated plastic container makes an ideal travel carrier for most Hermann's Tortoises. Line the bottom with a soft substrate such as damp paper towels or a folded towel to provide grip and cushioning during the drive. The container should be large enough for the tortoise to turn around but snug enough to prevent excessive sliding during turns and stops. Securing the container with a seatbelt or wedging it between stable objects on the floor of the vehicle will minimize jostling.
For longer drives, plan for periodic stops to check on the tortoise and offer water. Most Hermann's Tortoises will not eat during transport due to stress, so providing food is less critical than ensuring hydration. A shallow dish of water or a brief soak at a rest stop can help keep the animal hydrated, particularly during warm weather. Avoid leaving the tortoise unattended in a parked car, as interior temperatures can rise to dangerous levels within minutes even on moderately warm days.
During cold weather travel, additional precautions are necessary. Wrapping the transport container in towels or placing a hand warmer (not in direct contact with the tortoise) nearby can help maintain adequate temperatures. If the journey involves extended exposure to cold, such as loading and unloading in freezing conditions, minimize the time the tortoise spends outside the climate-controlled vehicle. A thermometer placed inside the transport container provides peace of mind and allows the keeper to respond quickly to temperature changes.
