The Argentine black and white tegu, Salvator merianae, is a large, robust lizard native to the subtropical and temperate regions of South America. Its range spans central and eastern Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and southern Brazil, where it inhabits a variety of environments including grasslands, savannas, forest edges, and disturbed agricultural land. The species belongs to the family Teiidae, a diverse group of New World lizards that fills ecological niches comparable to those occupied by monitor lizards in the Old World.
Adult Argentine tegus are among the largest lizards in the Americas, with males commonly reaching four feet in total length and exceptional individuals exceeding five feet. Their distinctive black and white banding pattern, muscular build, and powerful limbs give them a commanding presence in their native habitats. They are active, intelligent predators with keen senses of smell and vision, and their foraging behavior encompasses a wide range of food items including insects, snails, small vertebrates, eggs, fruits, and carrion.
One of the most remarkable physiological features of the Argentine tegu is its capacity for seasonal brumation, a period of metabolic dormancy analogous to hibernation in mammals. During the cooler months in their native range, tegus retreat into deep burrows and enter a state of significantly reduced metabolic activity, surviving on stored fat reserves until warmer temperatures return. Recent research has revealed that Argentine tegus can generate metabolic heat during their reproductive season, a form of facultative endothermy that is extremely rare among lizards and has attracted considerable scientific interest.
The taxonomic history of the Argentine tegu has undergone significant revision. For many years, the species was classified under the genus Tupinambis, but molecular phylogenetic studies published in 2012 led to the reclassification of the Argentine black and white tegu and its close relatives into the resurrected genus Salvator. This reclassification reflected genetic divergences that warranted separating the southern South American tegus from their northern relatives, and the updated nomenclature is now widely adopted in both scientific and hobbyist literature.
