The Solomon Islands Skink (Corucia zebrata), widely known as the Prehensile-tailed Skink or Monkey-tailed Skink, is the largest extant species in the family Scincidae. Adults regularly attain total lengths of 60 to 80 centimeters, with some exceptional individuals approaching 90 centimeters from snout to tail tip. The species is endemic to the Solomon Islands archipelago, a chain of nearly one thousand islands spread across the southwestern Pacific Ocean east of Papua New Guinea. Within this archipelago, the skink occupies primary and secondary tropical rainforest from sea level to moderate elevations, where it leads an almost entirely arboreal existence among the dense canopy vegetation.
The Solomon Islands themselves are geologically ancient by Pacific Island standards, with some of the larger landmasses having origins in tectonic uplift and volcanic activity dating back millions of years. This geological history has produced a landscape of steep, heavily forested mountains, coastal lowlands, and a humid equatorial climate that supports extraordinary biodiversity. Corucia zebrata evolved within this environment, developing a suite of adaptations for life in the forest canopy that distinguish it from nearly all other skink species. Chief among these is the fully prehensile tail, a feature otherwise unknown in the Scincidae, which functions as a fifth limb during climbing and allows the animal to anchor itself securely among branches.
The species is strictly herbivorous, feeding on the leaves, flowers, fruits, and growing tips of a variety of tropical plants. This dietary specialization is highly unusual among skinks, which are overwhelmingly insectivorous or omnivorous. The Solomon Islands Skink's commitment to folivory has shaped its dentition, gut morphology, and foraging behavior, producing an animal that occupies an ecological niche more commonly associated with certain primates or arboreal mammals than with lizards. Its hindgut fermentation system, which relies on symbiotic microorganisms to break down cellulose, is among the most developed of any known lizard species.
Another remarkable biological feature is the species' reproductive strategy. The Solomon Islands Skink is viviparous, giving birth to a single large offspring after a gestation period that can exceed six months. This is one of the lowest reproductive outputs of any reptile, and the extended maternal investment continues after birth, with mothers and sometimes other group members tolerating and even appearing to guard neonates within their communal social groups. This combination of live birth, single offspring, extended gestation, and apparent post-natal care is virtually unparalleled among lizards and has contributed significantly to the species' scientific and popular appeal.
