The Slimy Salamander (Plethodon glutinosus) is a large, robust lungless salamander native to the deciduous and mixed forests of eastern North America. Its range stretches from southern New York and Connecticut southward through the Appalachian Mountains and Piedmont region into northern Florida, and westward into parts of eastern Oklahoma, Missouri, and central Texas. Within this broad geographic footprint, the species occupies a remarkably consistent ecological niche: the cool, moist floor of hardwood and mixed hardwood-conifer forests, where it shelters beneath logs, rocks, leaf litter, and inside the crevices of shale and limestone outcrops. It is among the most frequently encountered salamanders in the forests of the eastern United States, and for many naturalists and hikers, it serves as a first introduction to the extraordinary diversity of the family Plethodontidae.
The species belongs to the Plethodontidae, the lungless salamanders, the largest family of salamanders on Earth with over 400 described species. Plethodontids have entirely lost their lungs over the course of evolution and conduct all gas exchange through their skin and the mucous membranes of the mouth. This respiratory strategy ties them inextricably to moist microhabitats, as desiccation of the skin would compromise their ability to breathe. The Slimy Salamander's dependence on humid forest floor conditions explains its nocturnal habits, its preference for cool, shaded microsites, and its tendency to retreat underground or into deep rock crevices during dry or hot weather.
The common name derives from the animal's most distinctive defensive behavior. When handled or threatened by a predator, the Slimy Salamander secretes a thick, glue-like mucus from glands concentrated along its dorsal surface and tail. This secretion is remarkably adhesive, capable of bonding a would-be predator's jaws shut or rendering the salamander extremely difficult to grip. The substance is notoriously challenging to remove from human skin, often requiring vigorous scrubbing or the use of solvents, and this trait has made the species memorable to anyone who has picked one up in the field. The adhesive secretion is not toxic in any pharmacologically significant way but serves as an effective mechanical deterrent.
Ecologically, the Slimy Salamander functions as both a mid-level predator and a prey item within the forest floor food web. Adults feed on a wide variety of small invertebrates, including ants, beetles, earthworms, centipedes, spiders, and snails, using a projectile tongue to capture prey with remarkable speed. In turn, Slimy Salamanders are consumed by woodland snakes such as the Ring-necked Snake and various species of garter snake, as well as by birds, shrews, and larger amphibians. Population densities in favorable habitat can be surprisingly high, and biomass studies have demonstrated that the total mass of Plethodon salamanders in Appalachian forests can exceed that of all birds and mammals combined, underscoring their ecological significance.
