The Sailfin Dragon, known scientifically as Hydrosaurus pustulatus, is a large agamid lizard native to the Philippine archipelago. European naturalists first formally described the species in the early nineteenth century, though indigenous peoples of the Philippines had long been familiar with the animal and its distinctive sail-like crest. The genus Hydrosaurus encompasses several species spread across Southeast Asia, but H. pustulatus remains most closely associated with the Philippines, where it inhabits riverbanks, lakeshores, and coastal forests across multiple islands.
Early scientific accounts marveled at the animal's dramatic dorsal crest, which rises prominently along the tail of mature males and gives the species its common name. Nineteenth-century collectors working in the Philippines sent preserved specimens back to European museums, where taxonomists debated the relationships among various Hydrosaurus populations. These early classification efforts laid the groundwork for the modern understanding of sailfin dragon diversity, though genetic studies in recent decades have refined the picture considerably.
