The examining veterinarian should assess the tortoise for signs of respiratory infection, shell damage, parasitic burden, and dehydration — conditions that may be manageable in a stable captive environment but can deteriorate rapidly under the additional stress of travel.
Hydration is the single most important physiological consideration in pre-travel preparation. Russian Tortoises are adapted to arid environments but depend on periodic access to water and moisture-rich foods to maintain their fluid balance. In the days leading up to travel, the tortoise should be offered daily soaking sessions in shallow, lukewarm water for fifteen to twenty minutes per session. These soaks encourage the animal to drink and to void its bladder and bowels, which serves the dual purpose of ensuring adequate hydration and reducing the likelihood of soiling within the transport container. The tortoise's diet in the days before travel should emphasize high-moisture greens such as romaine, escarole, and soaked hay to supplement fluid intake.
Feeding should be suspended approximately twenty-four to forty-eight hours before the scheduled departure, depending on the expected duration of the journey. A tortoise that travels with a full digestive tract is more likely to experience gastrointestinal distress, regurgitation, or aspiration, all of which can be dangerous in the confined and unmonitored environment of a transport container. The animal's slow metabolism means that a brief fasting period of this length poses no nutritional risk to a healthy adult and substantially reduces the likelihood of complications during transit.
The timing of travel should be planned with attention to both seasonal conditions and the tortoise's own activity cycle. Russian Tortoises are most robust and stress-tolerant during their active season, which in most captive settings corresponds to the spring and summer months. Travel during the brumation period, when the animal's metabolism is suppressed and its immune function is reduced, is significantly riskier and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Similarly, travel during periods of extreme heat or cold requires additional precautions to maintain safe temperatures within the transport container, as the Russian Tortoise is vulnerable to both heat stroke at sustained temperatures above approximately 35 degrees Celsius and cold stress at temperatures below approximately 10 degrees Celsius.
