Reeve's Turtle (Mauremys reevesii) is a small to medium-sized semi-aquatic freshwater turtle native to a broad swath of East Asia. Its natural range encompasses much of eastern and central China, the Korean Peninsula, Japan, and Taiwan. Within this distribution, the species occupies a diverse array of lowland freshwater habitats including slow-moving rivers, marshes, rice paddies, ponds, canals, and the vegetated margins of lakes. It is a habitat generalist that thrives in both pristine wetlands and heavily modified agricultural landscapes, a trait that historically contributed to its abundance and its close proximity to human settlements across the region.
The species favors shallow, slow-flowing or still waters with soft substrates of mud or silt and abundant aquatic vegetation. In its native habitats, Reeve's Turtle is an opportunistic omnivore that feeds on aquatic invertebrates, small fish, amphibian larvae, carrion, and a wide variety of aquatic and terrestrial plants. This dietary flexibility allows the species to exploit seasonal changes in food availability, shifting between animal and plant matter depending on what is accessible. Basking is an important thermoregulatory behavior, and wild individuals are frequently observed hauling out onto partially submerged logs, rocks, and the muddy banks of waterways to raise their body temperature.
Morphologically, Reeve's Turtle is recognized by its relatively flat, oval carapace that is typically dark brown to black, sometimes bearing faint yellowish or tan keels and radiating markings. The plastron is dark with lighter edges, and the head and neck display distinctive pale yellow to cream-colored stripes that extend from the snout through the tympanic region and along the sides of the neck. Males are generally smaller than females and can be distinguished by their longer, thicker tails and a slightly concave plastron. Adult carapace lengths typically range from thirteen to twenty-three centimeters, making this a manageable species in terms of physical size.
Despite its historically broad range and once-abundant populations, Reeve's Turtle has experienced severe population declines across much of its native territory over the past several decades. The primary drivers of these declines include overcollection for the food and traditional medicine trades, habitat destruction through wetland drainage and urban development, and water pollution. The species is now classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, and wild populations in many parts of China are considered fragmentary. In Japan, the species' status is complicated by the presence of both native and introduced populations, with genetic studies revealing a complex biogeographic picture that is still being resolved.
