The Red-Spotted Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens) is a subspecies of the Eastern Newt, a small salamander native to the eastern half of North America. Its geographic range stretches from the Maritime Provinces of Canada southward through New England and the mid-Atlantic states, continuing along the Appalachian corridor into Georgia and Alabama, and westward to the Great Lakes region and portions of the upper Midwest. Within this broad distribution, the Red-Spotted Newt occupies a remarkably diverse array of habitats, from high-elevation spruce-fir forests in the southern Appalachians to low-lying coastal plain woodlands and suburban park ponds.
The species is intimately associated with the deciduous and mixed forests of eastern North America. Adults spend most of their lives in shallow, vegetated freshwater bodies — farm ponds, beaver impoundments, lake margins, slow-moving stream pools, and vernal pools that retain water year-round. The juvenile terrestrial stage, known as the red eft, inhabits the moist forest floor, sheltering beneath leaf litter, rotting logs, and moss-covered rocks. This dual-phase life history, aquatic as larvae and adults but terrestrial as juveniles, ties the Red-Spotted Newt to both the health of forest ecosystems and the integrity of freshwater habitats across its range.
The species thrives in areas where intact forest surrounds clean, unpolluted water sources. It is particularly abundant in the Appalachian Mountains, where cool temperatures, high rainfall, and extensive forest cover create ideal conditions. In the northern parts of its range, the Red-Spotted Newt can be found at elevations from sea level to above 1,500 meters. Population densities in optimal habitat can be remarkably high, with dozens of adults observed in a single small pond during the breeding season. This abundance, combined with the conspicuous orange coloration of the eft stage, has made the Red-Spotted Newt one of the most frequently encountered amphibians in eastern North American forests.
Ecologically, the Red-Spotted Newt functions as both predator and prey within its community. Adults consume a wide variety of aquatic invertebrates, including insect larvae, snails, small crustaceans, and worms, as well as amphibian eggs and very small tadpoles. Red efts feed on terrestrial invertebrates such as springtails, mites, and small insects encountered on the forest floor. In turn, the aquatic adults are preyed upon by larger fish, wading birds, and snapping turtles, though their skin toxins provide a measure of chemical defense. The eft stage, with its bright aposematic coloration warning of tetrodotoxin in the skin, is largely avoided by predators, an adaptation that allows it to forage openly during daylight hours in a manner unusual for most salamanders.
