The Red-Eyed Leaf Frog (Agalychnis callidryas) is a neotropical tree frog native to the humid lowland and premontane rainforests of Central America and the northernmost fringe of South America. Its range stretches from the Atlantic slope of southern Mexico through Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, continuing into Panama and reaching the Choco region of northwestern Colombia. Throughout this distribution, the species is closely associated with primary and mature secondary tropical forest, typically at elevations below 1,200 meters, where it depends on the dense canopy, abundant epiphytic vegetation, and standing or slow-moving water sources that characterize intact neotropical wet forest.
The animal's habitat requirements are specific and intimately tied to the structural complexity of its environment. Red-Eyed Leaf Frogs are strictly arboreal outside of their breeding season, spending daylight hours pressed flat against the undersides of broad leaves in the mid to upper canopy, where their vivid green dorsal coloration provides effective concealment against the foliage. At night, the frogs become active, foraging for insects along branches, leaf surfaces, and epiphytic root mats. During the breeding season, they descend to vegetation overhanging temporary or permanent pools, streams, and flooded depressions, where females deposit clutches of eggs on leaf surfaces above the water. Upon hatching, the tadpoles drop into the water below to complete their larval development.
The species' reliance on undisturbed forest canopy and clean aquatic breeding sites makes it a useful indicator of ecosystem health in its native range. Populations tend to be most robust in areas of continuous, unfragmented forest cover, and the species becomes rare or absent in heavily logged or converted landscapes. Despite this sensitivity to habitat degradation, the Red-Eyed Leaf Frog remains relatively widespread where suitable forest persists, and it has not experienced the catastrophic population crashes associated with chytridiomycosis that have devastated many other Central American amphibian species, though it is not entirely immune to the fungal pathogen.
The physical appearance of the Red-Eyed Leaf Frog is among the most distinctive of any amphibian. The large, protruding eyes with vertically elliptical pupils are a deep crimson red, set against a bright green body that may display faint white or pale blue lateral striping. The flanks and inner thighs reveal bold bars of cobalt blue and yellow or cream, visible only when the frog is in motion. The ventral surfaces of the feet are bright orange or red, and the toe pads are large and well-developed for gripping smooth leaf surfaces. This combination of concealed flash coloration is believed to serve a startle defense function, with the sudden exposure of vivid colors disorienting potential predators long enough for the frog to escape.
