The Plated Lizard belongs to the family Gerrhosauridae, a group of armored lizards found exclusively in Africa and Madagascar. The most commonly encountered species in the reptile hobby are Broadleysaurus major, widely known as the Sudan Plated Lizard or Great Plated Lizard, and Gerrhosaurus validus, the Giant Plated Lizard. These robust, ground-dwelling reptiles inhabit the savannas, rocky outcrops, and semi-arid grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from Sudan and Ethiopia in the northeast through East Africa and southward into Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Their distribution across this enormous geographic area has produced several regional populations with subtle differences in size, scalation, and coloration.
The defining physical characteristic of all plated lizards is the arrangement of their scales. The dorsal and lateral scales are heavily ossified and rectangular, organized in distinct longitudinal and transverse rows that give the animal an armored, plated appearance. A lateral fold of granular scales runs along each flank, separating the rigid dorsal plates from the ventral scutes and allowing the body to expand during breathing and after feeding. This fold is a hallmark of the Gerrhosauridae and serves as a reliable field identification feature. The overall body plan is sturdy and somewhat dorsoventrally flattened, an adaptation that allows the animal to wedge itself into rock crevices as a defense against predation.
Ecologically, plated lizards are omnivorous generalists. Wild populations feed on a broad range of invertebrates including beetles, grasshoppers, termites, and millipedes, supplemented by soft fruits, flowers, and tender vegetation when available. This dietary flexibility has contributed to the genus's success across a wide range of habitats, from the arid thornveld of southern Africa to the moister woodland savannas of the East African plateau. Plated lizards are diurnal and thermoregulate by basking on exposed rock surfaces during the morning and late afternoon, retreating into crevices or burrows during the hottest part of the day and throughout the night.
The evolutionary lineage of the Gerrhosauridae is ancient and distinct. Molecular phylogenetic studies place the family within the superfamily Cordyloidea, alongside the closely related Cordylidae, the girdled lizards and their allies. Fossil evidence suggests that the gerrhosaurid lineage diverged from the cordylids during the Cretaceous or early Paleogene, making the plated lizards a venerable group with a history stretching back tens of millions of years. Their persistence across such deep evolutionary time speaks to the effectiveness of their generalist strategy and their armored body plan as a survival mechanism in the dynamic ecosystems of the African continent.
