The design of a transport container for a Pancake Tortoise must account for the species' distinctive body shape, its tendency toward rapid and agile movement, and its instinctive drive to seek out tight spaces when stressed. A container that is appropriate for transporting a dome-shelled tortoise of equivalent mass will often be poorly suited to a Pancake Tortoise, because the flat profile of this species allows it to exploit gaps, seams, and ventilation openings that would be inaccessible to a more conventionally shaped chelonian. The transport container must be escape-proof without restricting airflow, stable enough to prevent the animal from being tossed during vehicle movement, and sized to limit excessive wandering while still allowing the tortoise to turn around.
Plastic containers with secure, locking lids — such as small Sterilite or Really Useful brand boxes — are widely used by experienced Pancake Tortoise keepers for short-distance transport. Ventilation holes should be drilled in the sides of the container, not the lid, to reduce the risk of temperature stratification and to prevent direct sunlight from striking the animal through overhead openings. The diameter of ventilation holes must be smaller than the narrowest dimension of the tortoise's body, and keepers should err on the side of caution, remembering that a stressed Pancake Tortoise can compress itself into spaces that appear impossibly narrow. A grid of small holes rather than a few larger ones provides better air circulation with less escape risk.
The interior of the container should be lined with a material that provides traction and cushioning. Layers of unprinted newspaper, paper towels, or clean terry cloth serve this purpose well. Loose substrates such as coconut fiber or soil should be avoided during transport, as they can shift and cover the animal, creating disorientation and respiratory irritation in an enclosed space. A folded piece of cloth or a small, flat piece of cork bark placed inside the container gives the tortoise something to press against, partially satisfying its instinct to wedge into a confined space and reducing stress-related activity during the journey.
For longer trips, particularly those involving overnight durations or temperature extremes, the transport container should be placed inside a secondary insulating container. A styrofoam shipping box or an insulated cooler bag provides thermal buffering that protects the animal from rapid temperature fluctuations. The space between the inner transport container and the outer insulation can accommodate heat packs or cold packs as needed, though these should never be placed in direct contact with the animal's container to avoid localized overheating or chilling.
