The Mudpuppy inhabits a broad swath of eastern North America, but successfully observing one in the wild requires an understanding of the specific habitat types and microhabitats the species favors. Mudpuppies are most reliably found in clean, moderately flowing rivers and streams with rocky or gravelly bottoms, where flat stones, submerged logs, and undercut banks provide the shelter they require during daylight hours. The Great Lakes basin, the Ohio River drainage, and the upper Mississippi watershed contain some of the highest-density Mudpuppy populations on the continent, and waterways within these systems offer the best prospects for observation. Clear-water streams in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and New York are particularly productive, as are tributaries of the St. Lawrence River in Ontario and Quebec.
Within suitable waterways, Mudpuppies show strong microhabitat preferences that can guide observers to the most productive search areas. The animals are almost invariably found on the bottom substrate, typically beneath flat rocks large enough to cover their bodies, in water ranging from a few inches to several feet deep. They avoid areas of heavy silt or fine sediment, preferring rocky or cobbly substrates where clean water flows over and between stones. The downstream sides of riffles, pool margins adjacent to rocky runs, and the bases of small cascades are all areas where Mudpuppies concentrate. In lakes, they are most commonly associated with rocky shorelines, submerged boulder fields, and areas near cold-water inflows, and they tend to avoid soft, silty bottoms.
Seasonality plays a significant role in the likelihood of encountering Mudpuppies. The species is active year-round, a notable difference from many North American amphibians that become dormant during winter. In fact, some of the best opportunities to observe Mudpuppies occur during the colder months, when the animals become more active during daylight hours and may be found in shallower water. Ice fishermen in the Great Lakes region frequently catch Mudpuppies on baited hooks during winter, and researchers conducting winter stream surveys often find the animals more readily than during summer. Spring and autumn are also productive seasons, as Mudpuppies move into shallower, more accessible habitats in response to changing water temperatures and photoperiod.
Nighttime observation offers the highest probability of encountering Mudpuppies during warmer months. The species is predominantly nocturnal, emerging from beneath cover after dark to forage along the stream bottom. Observers equipped with headlamps or waterproof flashlights can wade shallow streams at night and spot Mudpuppies moving slowly across the substrate or resting in the open. This technique, commonly known as stream walking or night herping, requires patience and a willingness to get wet, but it can yield remarkably close views of an animal that is otherwise difficult to see.
