The Leachianus Gecko (Rhacodactylus leachianus) holds the distinction of being the largest living gecko species on Earth. Native exclusively to the archipelago of New Caledonia, a French overseas collectivity situated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean roughly 1,200 kilometers east of Australia, this remarkable gecko inhabits the dense, humid rainforests that cloak the islands' mountainous interiors and coastal lowlands. Adults regularly reach total lengths of 14 to 17 inches and can weigh over 300 grams, dimensions that place them in a category entirely apart from the small, skittering geckos familiar to most people. The species is found on Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia, as well as on several smaller surrounding islands including the Isle of Pines and various islands in the Loyalty group, with distinct locale-specific populations exhibiting notable variation in size, color, and pattern.
New Caledonia's geological history is central to understanding why such an outsized gecko evolved there. The archipelago separated from the ancient supercontinent Gondwana approximately 85 million years ago and has remained isolated ever since, creating an evolutionary laboratory of extraordinary richness. The forests that blanket the islands harbor an exceptional concentration of endemic species found nowhere else, from ancient conifers and flowering plants to a suite of gecko species that represent one of the most remarkable radiations within the family Diplodactylidae. The Leachianus Gecko evolved within this isolated ecosystem, free from many of the mammalian predators that constrain gecko body size on continental landmasses. The absence of native land mammals allowed geckos to fill ecological niches typically occupied by larger vertebrates elsewhere, contributing to the evolution of the giant body plan that defines the species today.
Ecologically, the Leachianus Gecko is an arboreal and largely nocturnal animal. It spends its days concealed within tree hollows, under loose bark, and in dense vegetation, emerging at night to forage. Its diet is omnivorous, encompassing insects, smaller lizards, fruit, nectar, and tree sap. The species is notably territorial, with adults defending favored resting hollows and foraging zones with aggressive vocalizations and, when pressed, physical confrontation. The growling and barking calls produced by Leachianus Geckos are among the most distinctive sounds in the New Caledonian forest, audible over considerable distances and serving as a primary means of intraspecific communication in the dense canopy where visual signaling is limited.
The species' arboreal lifestyle is supported by a suite of physical adaptations. Its toes bear lamellae — microscopic hair-like structures that exploit van der Waals forces to generate adhesion — allowing it to climb smooth vertical surfaces and even hang inverted. Its robust body, prehensile tail remnant, and powerful jaws equip it for life among heavy branches and in the confined spaces of tree hollows. The tail of the Leachianus Gecko is notably short relative to its body length, a feature that distinguishes it from many other gecko species, and while it can be dropped as a defense mechanism, wild adults are frequently found with intact original tails, suggesting that tail autotomy is a last-resort behavior in this species.
