The Japanese Fire-Bellied Newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster) is a semi-aquatic salamander native to the main islands of Japan, where it inhabits a remarkably wide range of freshwater environments. Its distribution spans Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, with scattered populations also reported on several smaller islands. Within this range, the species occupies ponds, ditches, marshes, slow-moving streams, flooded rice paddies, and even the shallow margins of forested mountain pools. It is one of the most commonly encountered amphibians in rural Japan, and its presence in agricultural landscapes has made it a familiar creature to generations of Japanese farmers and villagers.
The species belongs to the family Salamandridae, a diverse group of newts and true salamanders distributed across Europe, Asia, and North America. Within this family, Cynops pyrrhogaster is placed in the genus Cynops, which contains several species of fire-bellied newts restricted to East Asia. The genus name derives from the Greek words for dog and eye, a reference to the vertical pupil shape characteristic of these animals. Ecologically, the Japanese Fire-Bellied Newt occupies a mid-level position in freshwater food webs. Adults feed on a variety of small invertebrates, including aquatic insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and snails. They are also known to consume amphibian eggs, including those of their own species, when other food sources are scarce. In turn, the newts are preyed upon by certain snakes, birds, and larger fish, though the tetrodotoxin in their skin provides a significant deterrent.
