The Common House Gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus) is a small nocturnal lizard whose native range spans the tropical and subtropical regions of South and Southeast Asia. Fossil and molecular evidence places the evolutionary origin of the Hemidactylus genus in southern Asia, with diversification occurring over tens of millions of years as tectonic shifts, climate fluctuations, and the formation of island archipelagos created new ecological niches. Within this broader genus, the House Gecko evolved as a generalist predator of small invertebrates, thriving in the warm, humid environments of the Indo-Malayan region. Its native territory stretches from the Indian subcontinent eastward through Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, the Malay Peninsula, and across the Indonesian and Philippine archipelagos.
In its ancestral habitat, the House Gecko occupies a range of microenvironments including rock faces, tree bark, leaf litter, and cave entrances. The species is primarily nocturnal, emerging at dusk to hunt insects attracted to available light sources. Its toe pads, which rely on van der Waals forces generated by millions of microscopic hair-like structures called setae, allow it to traverse smooth vertical surfaces and even inverted planes with remarkable agility. This adhesive capability, combined with a highly adaptable diet and a tolerance for close proximity to other individuals, positioned the House Gecko as a species uniquely suited to exploit human-modified environments long before the modern era.
The species was formally described by the French zoologist Anselme Gaetan Desmarest in 1836 under the name Hemidactylus frenatus, though earlier naturalists working in the East Indies had noted its presence in and around human habitations. The specific epithet frenatus, derived from the Latin for bridled, references the pattern of markings on the animal's head. By the time of its formal description, the House Gecko had likely already begun its long association with human structures, as trade routes through Southeast Asia facilitated its passive transport well before colonial-era shipping would accelerate its global spread.
Ecologically, the House Gecko is classified as a commensal species, meaning it derives benefit from its association with humans without causing significant harm. This relationship is remarkably ancient. Archaeological and ethnohistorical evidence suggests that as permanent human settlements developed in tropical Asia thousands of years ago, the House Gecko found in thatched roofs, granaries, and cooking areas an ideal combination of shelter, warmth, and a reliable supply of insect prey drawn to stored food and firelight. This pattern of exploitation of human structures is so deeply ingrained in the species that wild populations living entirely independent of human habitation are comparatively uncommon across much of its range.
