The Green Basilisk (Basiliscus plumifrons) is a large, visually striking lizard native to the lowland tropical rainforests of Central America. Its range extends from eastern Honduras through Nicaragua and Costa Rica into northwestern Panama, a corridor of dense tropical vegetation, warm temperatures, and abundant waterways that defines the species' ecological requirements. Within this range, the Green Basilisk is almost exclusively associated with riparian habitats, occupying the trees, shrubs, and overhanging branches along rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds. The proximity to water is not incidental but fundamental to the animal's survival strategy, providing both a food-rich environment and a critical escape route from predators.
The species belongs to the family Corytophanidae, a small Neotropical family of iguanian lizards sometimes referred to as the casquehead or helmeted lizards. Within the genus Basiliscus, which contains four recognized species, the Green Basilisk is distinguished by its vivid emerald coloration and the elaborate cranial and dorsal crests displayed by mature males. These crests, composed of skin stretched over bony supports, include a prominent double crest on the head, a tall sail-like crest running along the back, and a smaller crest along the proximal portion of the tail. The function of these crests has been debated, but they are widely understood to play a role in sexual selection and species recognition, with larger, more fully developed crests signaling maturity and fitness to potential mates.
Ecologically, the Green Basilisk is an omnivorous species with a diet that reflects the abundance and diversity of the tropical forests it inhabits. Adults consume a wide variety of invertebrates including crickets, beetles, flies, and spiders, as well as small vertebrates such as frogs, smaller lizards, and occasionally fish. Plant matter also forms a meaningful component of the diet, particularly flowers, fruits, and tender leaves. Juveniles tend to be more heavily insectivorous, shifting toward a broader dietary range as they grow. This dietary flexibility contributes to the species' success across its range and its relative adaptability in captive environments.
The reproductive biology of the Green Basilisk follows a pattern common to many tropical iguanian lizards. Females deposit clutches of eggs in shallow nests excavated in moist soil or leaf litter, typically producing between five and fifteen eggs per clutch. Multiple clutches may be produced within a single breeding season, which in the wild corresponds loosely to the warmer, wetter months. Incubation is temperature-dependent and typically lasts between eight and ten weeks under natural conditions. Hatchlings emerge fully independent and immediately seek arboreal cover near water, where they begin feeding on small insects.
The most celebrated behavioral trait of the Green Basilisk is its capacity for bipedal locomotion across the surface of water. When startled, individuals drop from overhanging branches and sprint across the water's surface on their hind legs, using a combination of rapid stride frequency, specialized toe morphology with fringed scales that increase surface area, and the generation of air pockets beneath each footfall to delay sinking. This remarkable adaptation, which is most effective in juveniles and smaller individuals due to favorable body-mass-to-surface-area ratios, has earned the species its widely recognized common name: the Jesus Christ Lizard.
