A pre-travel veterinary examination is strongly recommended for any journey beyond routine short-distance transport. The examining veterinarian should assess the tortoise's hydration status, body condition, respiratory health, and overall fitness for travel. Greek Tortoises are susceptible to upper respiratory tract disease, a condition that can be exacerbated by the stress and temperature fluctuations associated with transport, and any signs of nasal discharge, wheezing, or lethargy should be investigated and resolved before travel proceeds. For international transport, a veterinary health certificate issued within a specified period before departure is typically required by both the exporting and importing countries, and the veterinarian providing this certificate should be familiar with the specific health documentation requirements of the destination jurisdiction.
Hydration management is critical in the days leading up to transport. Greek Tortoises should be soaked in shallow, lukewarm water for fifteen to thirty minutes daily for several days before travel to ensure they are well-hydrated. Because tortoises do not drink readily from water bowls in the way that many other reptiles do, soaking provides a reliable method of encouraging fluid intake and stimulating the animals to void their bladder and bowels, both of which are desirable before a journey.
