The Gray Tree Frog (Dryophytes versicolor) is a small, arboreal amphibian native to the eastern half of North America. Its range extends from southern Manitoba and Ontario in Canada southward through the Great Lakes states, the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys, and down into the Gulf Coast states of Texas, Louisiana, and the Florida panhandle. Within this vast geographic footprint the species occupies deciduous and mixed forests, wooded swamps, suburban gardens, orchards, and virtually any habitat that combines trees or tall shrubs with access to shallow standing water for breeding. The Gray Tree Frog is a habitat generalist in the truest sense, and this ecological flexibility is one of the keys to its persistence across such a broad and climatically varied range.
The species belongs to the family Hylidae, the tree frogs, a diverse global lineage of over 700 species characterized by expanded adhesive toe pads that enable climbing on vertical and even inverted surfaces. Within this family the Gray Tree Frog was long classified in the genus Hyla, but molecular phylogenetic revisions in the early twenty-first century moved the North American arboreal species into the resurrected genus Dryophytes. The specific epithet versicolor, meaning changeable in color, reflects the animal's remarkable ability to shift its dorsal coloration from pale silvery gray to bright green, and through various mottled intermediates, in response to temperature, humidity, substrate color, and light conditions. This chromatophore-driven color change is among the most dramatic exhibited by any North American amphibian.
Ecologically, the Gray Tree Frog is an insectivorous predator of forest canopy and understory invertebrates. Its diet includes moths, beetles, ants, crickets, mites, and spiders, captured with a rapid projectile tongue strike. The species is almost entirely nocturnal and spends daylight hours motionless on tree bark, lichen-covered branches, or the undersides of broad leaves, where its cryptic coloration renders it nearly invisible. At night it becomes active and vocal, and its loud, resonant trill is one of the most characteristic sounds of warm-season evenings across eastern North America. Males call from elevated perches near breeding pools, and the intensity and duration of calling bouts are closely tied to ambient temperature.
The Gray Tree Frog is also notable for its physiological tolerance of cold. It is one of a small number of North American amphibian species capable of surviving partial freezing of its body tissues during winter. By producing cryoprotectant compounds, principally glycerol, the frog can endure ice formation in its extracellular spaces while preventing lethal intracellular freezing. This adaptation allows the species to overwinter beneath leaf litter, loose bark, or in shallow soil depressions well north of the frost line, emerging in spring to begin its breeding cycle. The freeze tolerance of the Gray Tree Frog has attracted sustained interest from physiologists studying cryobiology and has contributed significantly to the broader understanding of vertebrate cold hardiness.
