Unlike larger, more robust reptiles that tolerate handling and confinement with relative calm, the Five-Lined Skink is a fast, nervous animal whose primary response to perceived threats is explosive flight. A skink that escapes its transport container inside a vehicle, a veterinary waiting room, or an airport terminal will be extraordinarily difficult to recapture, and the stress of an extended chase can cause physiological harm including caudal autotomy, exhaustion, and suppressed immune function. Every aspect of transport preparation should therefore be oriented toward preventing escape and minimizing the duration and intensity of the animal's stress response.
The ideal transport container for a Five-Lined Skink is a small, secure, opaque or semi-opaque enclosure that limits the animal's visual exposure to its surroundings while providing adequate ventilation. A rigid plastic container with a tight-fitting, ventilated lid — such as a deli cup or small critter keeper — is the standard choice among experienced reptile transporters. The container should be small enough to prevent the animal from building up speed and colliding with the walls but large enough to allow the skink to turn around comfortably. A lining of damp paper towel or sphagnum moss on the floor of the container provides traction, absorbs waste, and helps maintain the moderate humidity levels that the species requires. A small piece of crumpled paper towel or a section of cork bark inside the container gives the skink a hide to press against, which significantly reduces visible stress behaviors.
Temperature management during transport is the single most critical safety consideration. The Five-Lined Skink is an ectotherm with a preferred body temperature range of approximately 28 to 32 degrees Celsius during active periods, and it can tolerate cooler temperatures during rest but is vulnerable to both overheating and chilling. Temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius can be rapidly lethal, while prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius can induce dangerous torpor from which recovery is uncertain. During warm-weather transport, the container should never be left in a parked vehicle, where interior temperatures can reach lethal levels within minutes even on moderately warm days. During cold-weather transport, insulated shipping containers, heat packs rated for reptile use, and thermal blankets should be employed to maintain the container's internal temperature within a safe range.
Fasting the skink for 24 to 48 hours before transport is standard practice. A skink transported with food in its digestive tract is more likely to regurgitate during transit, which is both a health risk and a source of container contamination. The brief fast is well within the species' physiological tolerance and eliminates the most common cause of messy, stressful transport incidents. Fresh water should not be provided in an open dish inside the transport container, as it will spill during movement. Instead, the damp substrate and occasional misting of the container interior are sufficient to prevent dehydration during trips of moderate duration.
