The Fire Skink (Lepidotheca fernandi, formerly classified as Riopa fernandi) is a robust, brilliantly colored skink native to the tropical and subtropical forests of West and Central Africa. Its geographic range spans a broad corridor of equatorial lowland forest from Guinea and Sierra Leone in the west, through Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria, and eastward into Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo. Within this extensive range, the species occupies the forest floor and the transitional zones between closed-canopy forest and more open woodland, favoring areas where deep leaf litter, decaying logs, and loose topsoil provide both cover and a reliable supply of invertebrate prey.
The habitat of the Fire Skink is defined by warmth, humidity, and structural complexity at ground level. These are animals of the forest understory, rarely encountered far from cover. Fallen trees, root tangles, termite mounds, and thick accumulations of decomposing vegetation create a mosaic of microhabitats that the Fire Skink exploits with considerable efficiency. The species is semi-fossorial, spending significant portions of the day buried in loose substrate or concealed within rotting wood, emerging primarily during periods of reduced light to forage for insects, spiders, earthworms, snails, and other small invertebrates. Seasonality in the Fire Skink's range is governed primarily by rainfall rather than temperature. The wet season, which varies in timing and duration across the species' range but generally spans from April through October in West Africa, brings increased humidity, standing water, and a surge in invertebrate activity that coincides with the Fire Skink's peak period of foraging and reproduction. The dry season drives the animals deeper into substrate refugia and reduces surface activity. This seasonal rhythm has implications for both wild population dynamics and the historical patterns of collection for the pet trade, as animals are most readily encountered and captured during or immediately following the wet season.
