The common name Fire-Bellied Newt is applied most frequently to two closely related species within the genus Cynops of the family Salamandridae: the Chinese Fire-Bellied Newt (Cynops orientalis), native to the lowland provinces of eastern and central China, and the Japanese Fire-Bellied Newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster), endemic to the main islands of Japan. Both species are true newts, aquatic to semi-aquatic members of the order Urodela, and despite their classification on this site under reptiles for navigational convenience, they are amphibians in every biological sense. Their shared common name derives from the vivid orange to crimson ventral coloration that serves as an aposematic warning to potential predators, signaling the presence of potent skin toxins.
Cynops orientalis inhabits a range spanning from Hubei and Anhui provinces southward to Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, and Guangdong in southeastern China. Within this range, the species is associated with still or slow-moving freshwater habitats at low to moderate elevations, including rice paddies, drainage ditches, shallow ponds, and the marshy edges of reservoirs. The landscape of its native habitat is one of intensive agriculture and dense human settlement, a factor that has profoundly shaped both the species' ecology and its conservation trajectory. Populations are frequently found in close proximity to human activity, inhabiting the very waterways that serve irrigated farming.
Cynops pyrrhogaster occupies a complementary range across the Japanese archipelago, occurring on Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu as well as numerous smaller islands. The Japanese species inhabits a broader altitudinal range than its Chinese relative, occurring from coastal lowlands to mountainous streams at elevations exceeding one thousand meters. Its habitat preferences are similarly aquatic, encompassing ponds, marshes, forest pools, slow streams, and the flooded margins of agricultural land. The cooler and more temperate climate of Japan, combined with the greater topographic diversity of the archipelago, has contributed to notable regional variation within the species, with populations in different areas exhibiting differences in body size, coloration intensity, and behavioral patterns.
Both species are small-bodied newts, with Cynops orientalis typically reaching total lengths of six to ten centimeters and Cynops pyrrhogaster somewhat larger at nine to thirteen centimeters. Their dorsal surfaces are dark brown to black, providing effective camouflage when viewed from above against the muddy substrates they inhabit. The vivid ventral coloration, ranging from deep scarlet to bright orange with irregular dark marbling, is concealed during normal activity and displayed only when the animal adopts a defensive posture known as the Unkenreflex, in which it arches its body to expose its underside. This display is backed by the genuine chemical defense of tetrodotoxin, the same potent neurotoxin found in puffer fish, produced in skin glands and capable of deterring or incapacitating would-be predators.
