The yellow flowers of the creosote bush are a favored food source, and the distribution of the Desert Iguana closely overlaps with the range of this dominant desert plant. The Desert Iguana constructs and maintains burrow systems in sandy substrate, often at the base of shrubs where root networks stabilize the soil. These burrows serve as thermoregulatory refuges, allowing the animal to escape the lethal surface temperatures of midday while remaining close to foraging areas. The species is also known to use the abandoned burrows of kit foxes, kangaroo rats, and desert tortoises, demonstrating an opportunistic approach to shelter. Seasonal activity patterns are strongly tied to temperature, with the animals entering a period of winter dormancy in the cooler months and reaching peak activity during the hottest part of the year, a pattern that runs counter to the seasonal rhythms of many sympatric reptile species.
