The Cuban Tree Frog (Osteopilus septentrionalis) is the largest tree frog species native to the Caribbean basin, with adult females regularly reaching lengths of five and a half inches from snout to vent. The species belongs to the family Hylidae, the broad grouping of tree frogs found throughout the Americas, but is placed within the genus Osteopilus, a small group of Caribbean endemics distinguished by the co-ossification of skin to the skull — a feature that gives the head a distinctively bony, almost armored texture when the skin is pulled taut. This cranial adaptation, unusual among tree frogs, is thought to aid in water conservation by reducing evaporative loss through the thin dermal tissue of the head, a meaningful advantage in the seasonally dry environments the species inhabits.
The native range of the Cuban Tree Frog encompasses Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands, a distribution that reflects the geological and biogeographic history of the Greater Antilles. Within Cuba, the species is found across virtually the entire island, from lowland agricultural areas and coastal mangrove margins to montane forests at moderate elevations. It is a habitat generalist of remarkable flexibility, occupying natural settings such as limestone karst formations, tree hollows, bromeliad axils, and the leaf litter of tropical dry forests, while showing equal comfort in heavily modified human landscapes including gardens, cisterns, drainage infrastructure, and the walls and rooflines of buildings. This willingness to exploit anthropogenic structures has been central to the species' subsequent history beyond its native range.
Ecologically, the Cuban Tree Frog is a voracious nocturnal predator whose diet encompasses a wide range of invertebrates — roaches, beetles, moths, spiders, and snails — as well as smaller vertebrates including anole lizards, smaller frog species, and occasionally juvenile snakes. Its large size relative to other tree frogs in its range gives it a competitive and predatory advantage that is relatively uncontested within its native Caribbean ecosystem, where the species has coevolved alongside its prey base and competitors over millions of years. The adhesive toe pads characteristic of hylid frogs are exceptionally well developed in this species, enabling it to scale smooth vertical surfaces including glass and painted walls with ease.
Reproduction is tied to the wet season, with males congregating at temporary and permanent freshwater bodies to produce a rasping, somewhat abrasive call that distinguishes them from other Caribbean hylids. Females deposit egg masses containing several thousand eggs in shallow water, and the resulting tadpoles develop rapidly, completing metamorphosis in as few as four to six weeks depending on water temperature and food availability. This rapid developmental timeline, combined with high fecundity and broad dietary flexibility, constitutes a life-history strategy that has proven extraordinarily effective when the species has been introduced to new environments outside its native range.
