The Chinese Softshell Turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) is a freshwater species belonging to the family Trionychidae, a group of turtles distinguished by their leathery, flexible carapaces and elongated snorkel-like snouts. Its native range spans a vast swath of East and Southeast Asia, encompassing mainland China from the Yangtze and Pearl River drainages northward into Manchuria, the Korean Peninsula, much of Vietnam, and possibly parts of Japan, though Japanese populations are now widely considered to be the result of ancient human introductions rather than natural colonization. The species thrives in slow-moving rivers, lakes, ponds, reservoirs, rice paddies, and irrigation canals, demonstrating a remarkable tolerance for a wide range of freshwater habitats including those significantly modified by agriculture.
Pelodiscus sinensis is among the most adaptable of all softshell turtle species. Adults typically reach a carapace length of twenty to thirty centimeters, though exceptional individuals may exceed this range. The carapace is olive to gray-green, smooth and pliable at the margins, and lacks the rigid scutes found in hard-shelled turtle families. The head is narrow and streamlined, terminating in a tubular proboscis that allows the animal to breathe while almost entirely submerged in mud or shallow water. This anatomical adaptation reflects the species' highly aquatic lifestyle; Chinese Softshell Turtles spend the vast majority of their time in water and are powerful, rapid swimmers capable of capturing fish and invertebrate prey.
The species exhibits several physiological traits that have contributed to both its ecological success and its appeal to human cultures. It is capable of cutaneous respiration, absorbing dissolved oxygen through specialized tissues in the throat and cloaca, which allows it to remain submerged for extended periods. In the northern portions of its range, the species hibernates in the mud at the bottom of waterways during winter, entering a state of reduced metabolic activity that can last several months. This cold tolerance has allowed Pelodiscus sinensis to colonize temperate climates that are inhospitable to many other softshell species.
The evolutionary history of the Trionychidae extends deep into the Cretaceous period, and fossil evidence indicates that softshell turtles were present in Asia well before the mass extinction event that ended the age of the dinosaurs. The lineage that gave rise to Pelodiscus sinensis diversified as the freshwater systems of East Asia took their modern form during the Cenozoic era. The genus Pelodiscus was long subsumed within the broader genus Trionyx, and the taxonomic reclassification of the Chinese Softshell Turtle into its current genus was not fully resolved until molecular phylogenetic studies in the late twentieth century clarified the relationships among Asian softshell turtles.
