These geckos are strongly associated with cave entrances, limestone outcrops, and the cool, humid microhabitats found within karst geology, a landscape shaped over millennia by the dissolution of soluble bedrock into dramatic pinnacles, sinkholes, and subterranean chambers. This geological setting is central to the identity of the genus and distinguishes cave geckos from the vast majority of gecko species worldwide.
The karst landscapes inhabited by Goniurosaurus species are among the most biogeographically complex environments on Earth. Southern China's Guangxi and Guizhou provinces, northern Vietnam's Ha Long Bay region, and the isolated limestone islands of the Ryukyus each harbor endemic species or populations that have evolved in relative isolation. The fragmented nature of karst terrain, where habitable limestone outcrops may be separated by lowland valleys, rivers, or agricultural land, has driven speciation by limiting gene flow between populations. This pattern of geographic isolation and subsequent divergence is reflected in the high number of species within the genus, many of which occupy remarkably small ranges and are known from only a handful of localities.
Cave geckos are strictly nocturnal and spend daylight hours concealed within rock crevices, shallow caves, or beneath stones and fallen timber at the base of limestone formations. They emerge after dark to forage on invertebrates along rock surfaces and the forest floor. Their large, lidded eyes — a feature shared with other eyelid geckos in the family Eublepharidae — are adapted for low-light vision and give the animals a distinctive, alert appearance. Unlike the familiar adhesive toe pads of many gecko families, Goniurosaurus species possess slender digits with small claws, suited for gripping rough rock surfaces rather than climbing smooth vertical planes. This ground-dwelling lifestyle, combined with their secretive habits, meant that many species went undetected by Western science until surprisingly recently.
The ecological requirements of cave geckos are specific and narrow. They depend on relatively stable temperature and humidity conditions provided by the thermal buffering of limestone substrates and the canopy cover of surrounding forests. Ambient temperatures in their preferred microhabitats typically range from the low twenties to the upper twenties Celsius, with humidity levels consistently above sixty percent. Populations are most dense in areas where intact forest abuts exposed limestone, creating a mosaic of sheltered retreat sites and foraging habitat. Deforestation, quarrying of limestone for cement production, and agricultural encroachment on karst landscapes represent significant and ongoing threats to wild populations throughout the genus's range.
