The foundation of safe Armadillo Lizard transport is a properly prepared shipping or travel container that addresses the species' specific physiological and behavioral needs. Unlike more commonly transported reptile species such as ball pythons or leopard geckos, the Armadillo Lizard's heavily armored body and tendency to wedge itself into tight spaces when stressed present particular challenges for container design. The ideal transport container is a rigid, opaque, well-ventilated plastic box or insulated shipping container sized to prevent the animal from being thrown around during movement while providing enough space for the lizard to turn and adjust its position. A container that is too large allows the animal to slide and impact the walls during transit, while one that is too small can restrict breathing and cause stress-related injury.
Substrate choice within the transport container is important. A layer of crumpled, unprinted newsprint or paper towel provides a non-abrasive surface that absorbs waste and gives the lizard something to grip during transport, preventing the animal from sliding on a smooth container floor. Avoid loose particulate substrates such as sand or wood shavings, which can shift during movement, obstruct ventilation holes, and create inhalation risks in the confined space. A small piece of cork bark or a folded section of cardboard placed inside the container gives the Armadillo Lizard a hide to press against, satisfying its instinct to seek contact with solid surfaces and reducing visible stress behaviors.
Ventilation must be adequate but not excessive. Small holes drilled in the upper portion of the container walls allow air exchange without creating drafts that could lead to rapid temperature loss in cold conditions. The holes should be small enough to prevent the lizard from pushing a limb or its head through, as the species' flattened body profile can allow it to exploit surprisingly small openings. For extended shipments, a secondary outer container or insulated box provides both thermal buffering and physical protection, and the inner container should be secured within the outer box with crumpled newspaper or packing material to prevent shifting.
Before placing the animal in the transport container, the lizard should be given a final opportunity to drink water but should not be fed within twenty-four to forty-eight hours of travel. An empty digestive tract reduces the risk of regurgitation during transport, which can be dangerous in a confined space. The container should be prepared and allowed to reach the appropriate temperature before the animal is introduced, and a brief period of acclimation within the sealed container before the journey begins allows the lizard to settle and reduces the initial stress response.
