The African Sideneck Turtle belongs to the family Pelomedusidae, a lineage of freshwater turtles whose evolutionary roots extend deep into the Mesozoic era. The family is part of the suborder Pleurodira, a group distinguished by the lateral retraction of the head into the shell rather than the straight-back withdrawal seen in cryptodiran turtles. This anatomical trait, which gives the sideneck turtles their common name, is an ancient adaptation that has persisted for over one hundred million years and marks the Pelomedusidae as living representatives of one of the oldest surviving turtle body plans on Earth.
The species most commonly sold under the name African Sideneck Turtle is Pelusios castaneus, the West African Mud Turtle, though the common name is sometimes applied more broadly to several species within the genus Pelusios. These turtles inhabit a wide swath of sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from Senegal and Guinea-Bissau in the west through the Congo Basin and into parts of East Africa. They are semi-aquatic animals found in slow-moving rivers, seasonal floodplains, marshes, ponds, and even irrigation ditches. Their ability to tolerate a range of aquatic conditions, from clear forest streams to turbid agricultural waterways, has allowed the genus to occupy an unusually broad ecological niche.
Pelusios castaneus was first formally described by the German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in 1778, based on specimens collected from coastal West Africa. The species was originally placed within the broader genus Testudo before being reclassified as herpetological taxonomy matured during the nineteenth century. Throughout the 1800s, European collectors and naturalists encountered sideneck turtles during exploratory and colonial expeditions across Africa, and specimens found their way into the collections of major natural history museums in London, Paris, and Berlin.
In the wild, African Sideneck Turtles fill an important ecological role as both predator and scavenger. They feed on aquatic invertebrates, small fish, amphibians, and carrion, helping to regulate populations of insects and other organisms in their freshwater habitats. Their foraging activities also contribute to nutrient cycling in the water systems they inhabit. During the dry season, some populations estivate by burying themselves in mud along drying riverbeds, a behavioral adaptation that allows survival through months of drought until the rains return and refill their aquatic habitats.
