The Satin rabbit owes its existence to a chance genetic mutation discovered in 1934 by Walter Huey, a breeder working with Havana rabbits in Pendleton, Indiana. Among a litter of otherwise ordinary Havanas, Huey noticed several kits whose fur displayed an unusual, almost luminous sheen. Rather than dismissing the anomaly, he recognized something remarkable was at work and set about isolating the trait through selective breeding.
The distinctive luster of the Satin coat is the result of a recessive gene that alters the structure of individual hair shafts. In standard rabbit fur, the outer shell of each hair is opaque and somewhat rough, scattering light in all directions. In Satins, the hair shell is partially transparent and the pigment-bearing interior is narrower, allowing light to pass through and reflect off the inner surface. This gives the coat a depth of color and a silken glow unlike anything seen in other rabbit breeds.
Huey worked diligently throughout the late 1930s to establish a breeding population that consistently produced the satin fur gene. He shared his stock with other breeders who were equally captivated by the unique coat quality. The collaborative effort among these early enthusiasts laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most visually striking breeds in the American rabbit fancy.
By the early 1940s, enough breeding stock existed and enough consistency had been achieved that Satin breeders felt confident presenting the variety for formal recognition. The American Rabbit Breeders Association officially recognized the Satin as a distinct breed in 1946, initially accepting only white specimens. Over the following decades, additional color varieties were developed and accepted, expanding the breed's appeal and genetic diversity.
