The Satin Angora Rabbit emerged from a deliberate breeding effort in the early 1980s, when Canadian breeder Leopoldina Meyer set out to combine the luminous hair shaft of the Satin rabbit with the long, harvestable wool of the French Angora. The satin gene, a recessive mutation first identified in a litter of Havana rabbits in 1934 by Walter Huey of Pendleton, Indiana, produces a translucent hair shell that refracts light and gives the coat an unmistakable sheen. Meyer recognized that introducing this gene into an Angora wool coat could produce fiber with a luster and vibrancy that no existing Angora variety could match, creating a breed that would be prized by hand spinners and fiber artists.
Meyer's breeding program crossed Satin rabbits with French Angoras over multiple generations, selecting offspring that carried both the recessive satin gene in homozygous form and the long wool growth characteristic of the Angora lineage. The process was neither quick nor straightforward. Early crosses often produced rabbits with coats that were either too short to be useful as wool producers or that carried the satin sheen on a coat too sparse to harvest in meaningful quantities. Achieving the desired combination required patient line breeding and rigorous culling of animals that did not meet the dual criteria of satin-quality sheen and dense, spinnable wool.
The breed's development took place largely outside the spotlight of major rabbit shows and publications. Meyer worked in relative obscurity for several years, refining her lines and sharing stock with a small network of fellow breeders who were similarly interested in the intersection of fiber quality and rabbit genetics. This small community of early adopters played a critical role in expanding the gene pool and testing the breed's fiber production under different management systems, climates, and dietary regimens. Their collective experience demonstrated that the satin Angora coat, while requiring more attentive grooming than a standard Angora coat, produced wool of extraordinary beauty.
By the mid-1980s, Meyer and her collaborators had established a breeding population stable enough to begin the process of seeking formal recognition. The animals bred true for both the satin hair shaft and the Angora wool length, and the community had developed a preliminary standard that described the ideal specimen in terms of body type, wool density, sheen quality, and overall conformation.
