The Dwarf Hotot's story begins not with the dwarf variety itself but with its larger ancestor, the Blanc de Hotot. The Blanc de Hotot was developed in Hotot-en-Auge, Normandy, France, by Eugenie Bernhard in the early twentieth century. Bernhard spent over a decade crossing Checkered Giants, White Flemish Giants, and White Vienna rabbits to create a large, all-white meat and fur breed distinguished by narrow bands of dark pigment around each eye. This distinctive eyeliner marking would become the defining visual trait carried forward into the dwarf version decades later.
The miniaturization of the Hotot type began independently in both Germany and the Netherlands during the 1970s. In Germany, breeders crossed the Blanc de Hotot with Netherland Dwarfs, working to compress the eye-banded white body into a compact dwarf frame. The challenge was immense because reducing body size while preserving the precise, narrow eye bands required generations of selective breeding. Many offspring lost the bands entirely, produced bands that were too wide, or developed stray colored patches on the body that disqualified them from the Hotot ideal.
Dutch breeders pursued a parallel path, also crossing the Blanc de Hotot with Netherland Dwarfs but working from different foundation stock. This meant that when the two lines eventually met, they offered genetic diversity that proved critical to the breed's long-term viability. The convergence of German and Dutch bloodlines gave later breeders a broader genetic base than either line could provide on its own, reducing the inbreeding pressures that often plague new dwarf breeds.
By the late 1970s and early 1980s, both German and Dutch breeders had achieved a reasonably consistent dwarf rabbit with the hallmark eye bands. The breed was exhibited at European shows and began to attract attention from American rabbit fanciers who traveled to European conventions. These early international connections would prove pivotal in bringing the Dwarf Hotot across the Atlantic and setting the stage for its development in the United States.
