A standard two-horse trailer designed for riding horses will not accommodate a Shire — the interior height is typically insufficient, the stall width too narrow, and the floor and axle ratings inadequate for the load. Shire owners need a trailer specifically rated for draft horses or a large stock trailer with sufficient headroom, ideally 8 feet or more of interior height, and a gross vehicle weight rating that accounts for the combined weight of two Shires plus the trailer itself.
The tow vehicle must be matched to the trailer and its load. A fully loaded draft horse trailer carrying one or two Shires can easily exceed 10,000 pounds, requiring a heavy-duty pickup truck or commercial vehicle with appropriate towing capacity, braking systems, and transmission cooling. Owners should consult their vehicle's towing specifications carefully and factor in payload — including the weight of hay, water, and equipment carried in the trailer — when calculating total load. Exceeding towing capacity compromises vehicle handling and braking performance, creating serious safety risks.
Loading and unloading a Shire demands patience and facilities designed for large horses. Ramps must be wide enough and rated for the horse's weight, and the loading area should be level and firm underfoot to prevent slipping. Many experienced Shire owners recommend step-up trailers over ramp-load designs, as a confident Shire can step up into a trailer more easily than it can navigate a ramp that may flex under its weight. Regardless of trailer design, the horse should be trained to load and unload calmly well before any trip is planned.
During transit, Shires benefit from the same best practices that apply to all horses — adequate ventilation, frequent rest stops on long journeys, access to hay and water, and protection from temperature extremes — but their size introduces additional considerations. The trailer's suspension and tire condition are more critical with heavier loads, and the driver must account for longer stopping distances and wider turning radii. On journeys exceeding a few hours, planned rest stops where the horse can be unloaded, walked, and watered are strongly recommended.
