Trailering is by far the most common method of transporting Mustangs, whether for veterinary visits, competitions, trail riding excursions, or relocation. For Mustangs that have been recently adopted from the wild, trailer loading and travel can be particularly stressful, and owners should invest significant time in desensitization and training before attempting a long haul. Patience during this process pays dividends in safety for both horse and handler.
Choosing the right trailer is essential. Mustangs vary in size from compact individuals under 14 hands to taller horses approaching 15 hands, so the trailer should provide adequate headroom and width for the individual horse. Stock trailers with open interiors can be a good choice for Mustangs that are still becoming accustomed to confinement, as they allow more airflow and visibility. Slant-load and straight-load trailers both work well for experienced travelers, with the choice often coming down to the horse's individual preference and comfort.
Proper preparation before a trip includes checking tire pressure and condition, testing all lights and brakes, inspecting the floor for rot or damage, and ensuring that latches and dividers are secure. The trailer should be bedded with shavings, straw, or rubber mats to provide cushioning and traction. Hay bags or nets should be secured at an appropriate height, and fresh water should be available for any trip exceeding a couple of hours. Owners should carry a basic equine first aid kit, copies of health certificates and Coggins test results, and the horse's BLM title or adoption paperwork.
During transit, drivers should maintain moderate speeds, take curves and corners slowly, and avoid sudden braking. Mustangs benefit from rest stops every three to four hours on long hauls, during which they should be offered water and allowed to rest in the trailer with the engine off and windows open. Unloading at unfamiliar rest stops is generally not recommended unless a secure enclosure is available, as even well-trained Mustangs can react unpredictably in new environments.
