The Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) is native to central and eastern South America, with its primary populations concentrated in three distinct regions: the Pantanal wetlands of Brazil, the Gerais region of northeastern Brazil, and a smaller population historically found in eastern Bolivia and northeastern Paraguay. The species evolved within tropical and subtropical habitats characterized by palm savannas, open woodlands, and gallery forests along river corridors, where it developed a specialized diet centered on the hard-shelled nuts of native palm trees.
European naturalists first formally described the Hyacinth Macaw in the late eighteenth century, though indigenous peoples of South America had known and interacted with the species for thousands of years before Western documentation. The German naturalist John Latham provided one of the earliest scientific descriptions in 1790, and the bird's striking cobalt-blue plumage and immense size quickly captured the attention of European collectors and ornithologists. Specimens and illustrations began circulating through the scientific academies of Europe, sparking fascination with the New World's avian diversity.
The Hyacinth Macaw's evolutionary lineage places it within the tribe Arini of the family Psittacidae, alongside other Neotropical macaws. Its closest relatives are the Lear's Macaw and the now-extinct Glaucous Macaw, both members of the genus Anodorhynchus. Fossil and genetic evidence suggests that this genus diverged from other macaw lineages several million years ago, adapting to exploit palm-nut food sources in the open habitats of South America. The Hyacinth Macaw's massive beak, the most powerful of any parrot, is a direct evolutionary adaptation for cracking the extremely hard shells of acuri and bocaiuva palm nuts.
