The Moluccan Cockatoo, also known as the Salmon-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis), is native to the island of Seram and a handful of smaller surrounding islands in the southern Maluku province of Indonesia. These lush, tropical islands sit within the Wallacea biogeographic region, an area renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity and high concentration of endemic species. The dense lowland and hill forests of Seram have served as the primary habitat for this species for thousands of years, providing abundant fruiting trees, nesting cavities in old-growth timber, and the sheltered canopy corridors these large parrots depend on.
European naturalists first formally described the Moluccan Cockatoo in the eighteenth century, though indigenous peoples of the Maluku Islands had known and interacted with these birds for far longer. The species was scientifically classified by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1788, building on earlier descriptions from colonial-era explorers and traders who encountered the bird during spice trade expeditions through the region. The Maluku Islands, historically known as the Spice Islands, attracted waves of traders and colonizers from Arab, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, and British backgrounds. Dutch traders in particular played a significant role in transporting live specimens back to Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, where the birds became prized possessions among aristocrats and wealthy collectors.
Over the centuries, the forests of Seram have faced mounting pressures from logging, agriculture, and human settlement. These changes have progressively reduced the available habitat for wild Moluccan Cockatoo populations, a decline that accelerated sharply in the twentieth century as commercial logging operations expanded.
