Mesh screen filtering is a distance-related factor that deserves its own consideration because it effectively increases the distance your bulb needs to cover. A quality reflector can increase the UVB reaching your reptile by 50 to 100 percent compared to a bare bulb in an open fixture. People consistently underestimate distances inside enclosures, and even two or three inches of error can significantly change the UVB your reptile receives. Solar meters cost between 100 and 200 dollars, which feels like a lot until you consider that a single veterinary visit for metabolic bone disease costs significantly more. For keepers with multiple reptiles or expensive species, a solar meter pays for itself quickly.

Recheck your distances whenever you change anything in the enclosure. A new basking platform at a different height, a substrate change that raises or lowers the floor level, or moving the fixture to accommodate a new piece of decor all change the UVB distance. Get in the habit of measuring after any modification rather than assuming the distances you set up originally still apply. This is especially important after deep substrate changes or when transitioning from a juvenile setup with smaller furnishings to an adult arrangement with larger basking structures that bring the animal closer to the light source.

A reptile basking at the far end of the enclosure from a centrally mounted bulb may be receiving almost no useful UVB even though the setup looks well-lit. Position your UVB fixture so the highest-output zone covers the primary basking area, not the middle of the enclosure or an area the animal rarely uses.

Forgetting to account for distance changes when adding new decor or rearranging the enclosure is a subtle problem that creeps in over time. You set up the perfect UVB distance when the enclosure was new, then added a taller hide, swapped to a different basking rock, or added a few inches of substrate. Each of these changes moves your reptile closer to or farther from the bulb, potentially pushing them out of the effective zone. Measure again after any change.

Not replacing bulbs on schedule is effectively a distance problem in disguise. As UVB output degrades over months of use, the effective range of the bulb shrinks. A bulb that delivered adequate UVB at 12 inches when new might only be effective at 8 inches after ten months. If you do not replace on schedule, the functional distance between your bulb and adequate UVB exposure grows wider even though nothing in the physical setup has changed. The bulb still looks bright, the fixture has not moved, and the animal is still basking in the same spot - but the invisible UVB reaching them has quietly dropped below useful levels.
