When their needs are met, tegus can be remarkably robust animals that live fifteen to twenty years or longer. When their needs are not met, they develop health problems that are directly traceable to the gaps in their care, and those problems can escalate quickly in an animal this size.

The most common tegu species in the hobby are the Argentine black and white tegu and the red tegu, both from South America. Colombian tegus, gold tegus, and blue tegus also appear in collections, each with slightly different care requirements. Despite their differences, all tegus share some fundamental health vulnerabilities in captivity, most of which center on diet, calcium metabolism, temperature management, and the challenges of providing adequate space for an animal that can reach four feet or more in length.

Tegu keepers need to understand that these animals are not small lizards scaled up. Their metabolic rate is higher than most reptiles, approaching what some researchers describe as partially endothermic. They generate some internal body heat, regulate their temperature more actively than many other lizards, and have caloric and nutritional demands that reflect that elevated metabolism. This means husbandry mistakes that a bearded dragon might tolerate for months can create visible health problems in a tegu within weeks.

A common misconception is that tegus are hardy animals that thrive on neglect. This idea comes partly from their bold personalities and willing appetites, which can mask developing health problems until they become serious. A tegu that eats enthusiastically is not necessarily a healthy tegu if what it is eating is nutritionally inappropriate. A tegu that basks regularly is not necessarily thermoregulating correctly if the basking spot temperature is wrong. Apparent wellness can be deceiving in an animal that is good at compensating until it cannot anymore.

This guide focuses on the health issues that tegu keepers encounter most frequently, the husbandry foundations that prevent them, and the signs that indicate something needs attention. The approach here is practical. Know what can go wrong, know what causes it, and set up your animal's care so most of these problems never develop in the first place.

Section 2 Key Considerations

Metabolic bone disease is the single most common serious health problem in captive tegus, and it is almost entirely preventable. MBD develops when a tegu does not receive adequate calcium, does not have proper UVB exposure to synthesize vitamin D3, or both. The result is a body that cannot properly mineralize bones, leading to soft, deformed skeletal structure, muscle tremors, lethargy, loss of appetite, and in advanced cases, fractures from normal activity. Young, rapidly growing tegus are especially vulnerable because their skeletal development demands enormous amounts of calcium during the first two years of life.

Preventing MBD requires a two-pronged approach. First, the diet must include adequate calcium with a proper calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Whole prey items like mice and rats provide good calcium-to-phosphorus balance. Insects must be dusted with calcium powder. Fruits, which tegus love, are high in phosphorus relative to calcium and should be treats rather than staples. Second, UVB lighting must be strong enough and positioned correctly to allow vitamin D3 synthesis. A tegu in a large enclosure with a weak UVB bulb mounted too far away may receive effectively zero useful UVB exposure despite the light technically being present.

Obesity is the other major dietary health issue in tegus, and it develops because these animals will eat anything you put in front of them in quantities that exceed their actual needs. A fat tegu is not a healthy tegu. Excess weight stresses joints, organs, and the cardiovascular system, shortens lifespan, and can cause reproductive complications in females. Keepers who free-feed high-fat items like eggs, dog food, and fatty rodents without monitoring body condition are setting their tegus up for obesity-related problems that will manifest in middle age.

Respiratory infections develop when tegus are kept in enclosures that are too cold, too dry, or too dirty. Tegus need basking spots of 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit and ambient temperatures in the low 80s on the warm side. Cool side temperatures below the mid 70s leave the animal unable to maintain the immune function that keeps respiratory pathogens in check. Low humidity, particularly below 60 percent, dries out mucous membranes and makes them vulnerable to bacterial colonization. Dirty substrate harboring mold and bacteria compounds the risk.

Parasites, both internal and external, affect tegus particularly when they are wild-caught or housed in conditions that allow parasite life cycles to complete. Internal parasites including various species of nematodes, coccidia, and flagellates are common in newly acquired tegus and should be screened for with a fecal examination by your reptile veterinarian. A healthy tegu can carry a low parasite load without obvious symptoms, but stress, illness, or poor husbandry can allow parasite populations to explode, causing weight loss, diarrhea, and declining condition.

Impaction is a risk with tegus because of their tendency to eat substrate along with food items, particularly when fed on loose particulate bedding. A tegu striking at a rat on cypress mulch may swallow a mouthful of substrate along with the prey. Over time, accumulated substrate material can form a blockage that the animal cannot pass. Signs include loss of appetite, straining to defecate, bloating, and lethargy. Severe impactions require veterinary intervention, potentially including surgery.

Section 3 Options Explained

Setting up a tegu enclosure that prevents the majority of health problems means getting four things right from the start: space, heat, UVB, and humidity. Adult tegus need enclosures measuring at minimum eight feet long by four feet wide by four feet tall, and bigger is always better. Inadequate space restricts movement, prevents proper thermoregulation, and contributes to obesity. There is no shortcut here. If you cannot provide the space, a tegu is not the right reptile for your situation.

Heating should create a strong thermal gradient with a basking surface of 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit at one end and a cool zone in the upper 70s at the other. Use a temperature gun to verify surface temperatures rather than relying on ambient air readings, which can be misleading. The basking area should be large enough for the tegu to warm its entire body, not just its head. Halogen flood bulbs tend to produce the most natural basking heat. All heat sources should be controlled by thermostats to prevent overheating.

UVB lighting needs to produce a Ferguson Zone 3 to 4 level of exposure at the basking distance. T5 high-output UVB tubes are the current standard for tegu enclosures, mounted inside the enclosure or with mesh-free access to prevent UV filtering. Replace UVB bulbs on the manufacturer's recommended schedule, as UV output declines long before the bulb stops producing visible light. A UV meter, while an investment, is the only way to verify that your tegu is actually receiving the UVB levels it needs for vitamin D3 synthesis.

Humidity in tegu enclosures should range from 60 to 80 percent, with a deep substrate layer that holds moisture at the bottom while the surface can dry somewhat between mistings. Cypress mulch, organic topsoil, or a mix of the two works well for maintaining humidity and allowing the burrowing behavior that tegus naturally exhibit. The deep substrate also supports the humidity levels needed for healthy shed cycles and respiratory health. Monitor humidity with a digital hygrometer placed at the animal's level, not near the ceiling where readings are misleading.

Diet for a healthy tegu should be varied, whole-food based, and portioned appropriately. Young tegus eat primarily insects and small amounts of whole prey, transitioning to a diet that includes more whole prey, eggs, and select fruits as they grow. Ground turkey or chicken, while convenient, lacks the calcium and organ nutrients that whole prey provides and should not be a dietary staple. Feed young tegus daily, juveniles every other day, and adults two to three times per week, adjusting based on body condition rather than appetite. A tegu will always act hungry. That does not mean it needs to eat.

Section 4 Practical Guidance

Establishing a relationship with a reptile veterinarian before you need one is especially important with tegus because not every exotic vet is comfortable working with a large, powerful lizard that can bite hard enough to break fingers. Find a vet who has tegu experience or at least significant monitor lizard experience, as the handling requirements and health concerns overlap considerably. Schedule a wellness exam within the first month of acquiring a new tegu, including a fecal parasite screening and a general physical assessment.

Monitor your tegu's body condition regularly rather than just tracking weight. A healthy tegu has a firm, muscular body with visible definition along the legs and shoulders. The tail base should be full but not bulging with fat deposits. The spine and hip bones should not be prominently visible, which would indicate underweight, nor should they be buried under rolls of fat. Learning to assess body condition by sight and feel helps you adjust feeding before weight problems become serious.

Brumation is a natural seasonal slowdown that healthy tegus experience, and it is important not to mistake it for illness. As day length shortens and temperatures drop in autumn, many tegus reduce activity, stop eating, and burrow into their substrate for weeks or months. This is normal and should be accommodated rather than fought. Provide a cool zone of 60 to 65 degrees during brumation while maintaining access to heat and water if the tegu emerges. Do not force-feed a brumating tegu. They will resume normal activity and appetite when their internal clock signals that the season has changed.

Shed problems in tegus typically indicate humidity issues rather than health problems. A tegu that sheds in clean, complete pieces is getting adequate humidity. One that retains patches of stuck shed, particularly on the toes, tail tip, and around the eyes, needs higher humidity, more frequent misting, or access to a soaking area large enough to submerge in. Address retained shed promptly because constriction bands on digits and tail tips can cut off circulation if left unattended.

Wound care for tegus follows the same principles as other reptiles but with the added consideration that tegus are strong animals that may resist treatment. Minor scratches and abrasions from enclosure furniture heal well with basic cleaning and antibiotic ointment. Deeper wounds, particularly bite wounds from cage mates during the breeding season, may need veterinary attention for debridement and antibiotics. Tegus heal well when given clean conditions and proper temperatures, but their strength means restraining them for wound care often requires two people.

Section 5 Common Mistakes

Feeding a tegu primarily dog food or cat food is one of the most persistent bad practices in tegu keeping. These products were formulated for mammals, not reptiles, and their protein-to-fat ratios, vitamin content, and mineral balance do not match what a tegu needs. Keepers who rely on processed mammal food as a staple often produce obese tegus with organ stress and nutritional imbalances that do not become obvious until significant damage has occurred. Whole prey, gut-loaded insects, and fresh whole foods should form the dietary foundation.

Using inadequate UVB lighting, or positioning it incorrectly, is responsible for more metabolic bone disease in tegus than any other single factor. A compact UVB bulb in the corner of an eight-foot enclosure does effectively nothing for a tegu basking six feet away. Linear T5 HO tubes running the length of the basking zone provide the coverage these large animals need. Mounting the tube behind mesh or glass filters out a significant portion of UV radiation, reducing its effectiveness. Get the right bulb, put it in the right place, and replace it on schedule.

Housing tegus in enclosures that are too small restricts their ability to thermoregulate, exercise, and express natural behaviors. A tegu kept in a four-foot tank does not just have less space. It has compromised temperature gradients, reduced ability to self-regulate, and limited opportunity for the physical activity that maintains muscle tone and cardiovascular health. Undersized housing is a slow-motion health problem that affects nearly every body system over time.

Ignoring early signs of illness because the tegu is still eating is a trap that catches experienced keepers as well as beginners. Tegus are food-motivated animals that may continue eating well into the progression of a serious health problem. By the time a tegu stops eating, the underlying issue is often advanced. Pay attention to subtler signals like changes in activity level, altered basking behavior, irregular defecation, labored breathing, or changes in the quality and frequency of sheds. These early indicators give you the opportunity to intervene before a problem becomes a crisis.

Section 6 Decision Help

Before bringing a tegu home, honestly assess whether you can provide the space, budget, and commitment these animals require for their entire lifespan. An Argentine black and white tegu that lives fifteen to twenty years in a properly sized enclosure with quality whole-food diet and regular veterinary care is a significant undertaking. The health problems covered in this guide are overwhelmingly preventable through proper husbandry, but proper husbandry for a tegu costs more in space, equipment, food, and veterinary care than most other common reptile species.

If your tegu shows signs of illness, the decision about when to seek veterinary care should err on the side of acting sooner rather than later. These are large animals with fast metabolisms that can decline more rapidly than a keeper expects. Respiratory symptoms, swelling, dramatic behavior changes, prolonged food refusal in an animal that is not brumating, and any signs of MBD such as tremors or rubbery jaw warrant prompt veterinary evaluation. The cost of an early vet visit is almost always less than the cost of treating an advanced problem.

Annual veterinary checkups are a worthwhile investment for tegus even when nothing appears wrong. A physical examination can catch early signs of MBD, obesity, respiratory issues, and dental problems before they become symptomatic. Fecal screening catches parasites that may be subclinical but building in numbers. Blood work establishes baseline values for your individual animal that make future diagnostic work more accurate. Think of it as preventive maintenance for an animal you plan to keep for two decades.

The best health insurance for your tegu is not an insurance policy. It is a correct enclosure with proper heat, UVB, humidity, and space, combined with a varied whole-food diet portioned for condition rather than appetite, and a keeper who pays attention to the subtle changes that signal developing problems. Get the basics right and most tegu health problems never develop. That is not a guarantee, but it is the closest thing to one that reptile keeping offers.
