Getting comfortable with the actual process of giving sub-Q fluids takes practice, and the first few sessions will feel clumsy. That is completely normal. Having a helper makes the first several sessions much easier. One person holds and comforts the rabbit while the other handles the needle and line. Gently restrain your rabbit without squeezing - a relaxed but secure hold works better than a tight grip because tension from you transfers directly to your rabbit. Talk to them quietly, offer a favorite treat as distraction, and keep the whole experience as low-stress as possible. Preventing dehydration starts with good daily habits. Always provide fresh, clean water in a bowl rather than a bottle because rabbits drink more from bowls. Some rabbits prefer their water slightly warm, others like it cold - experiment and see what yours prefers. Feed plenty of fresh leafy greens daily because the moisture content supports hydration significantly. Monitor your rabbit's water intake and droppings as part of a daily routine. Knowing what is normal for your individual rabbit is the single best tool for catching problems early. Seek immediate veterinary care if your rabbit shows signs of severe dehydration including sunken eyes, complete refusal of food and water, very dry gums, minimal or no droppings, or a hunched and unresponsive posture.
