You may see watery eyes, a thick white discharge collecting at the inner corner of the eyes, or matted wet fur on the cheeks. This does not mean the infection has jumped to a completely different system - the eyes and nose are connected in rabbits just as they are in people - but it does indicate the infection is expanding beyond the initial site.

More serious progression occurs when Pasteurella spreads deeper. Pneumonia develops when the bacteria move into the lungs, causing labored breathing, rapid respiratory rate, reduced appetite, and lethargy. Ear infections can develop if bacteria travel through the eustachian tubes to the middle or inner ear, potentially causing head tilt and balance problems. Abscesses can form anywhere the bacteria seed through the bloodstream, appearing as firm lumps under the skin, in the jaw, or internally around organs.

Reduce stress wherever possible by maintaining consistent routines, avoiding unnecessary changes to the living setup, and providing a quiet, secure space where your rabbit feels safe.

Give the full dose at consistent times each day, and complete the entire prescribed course even if your rabbit looks completely normal halfway through. Store medications as directed, usually refrigerated, and shake liquid preparations before dosing.
