While snuffles sounds almost cute, the reality is that respiratory infections in rabbits can be persistent, difficult to fully eliminate, and capable of progressing to dangerous lower respiratory disease if not taken seriously.
The most frequent bacterial culprit behind rabbit respiratory infections is Pasteurella multocida, and it is so common that estimates suggest the majority of domestic rabbits carry this bacterium in their nasal passages without showing any symptoms at all. The bacteria live quietly in the upper respiratory tract and only cause problems when the rabbit's immune system is compromised by stress, another illness, poor living conditions, or age-related decline. This carrier state is what makes Pasteurella so frustrating to deal with - you can treat the active infection, but the underlying bacteria often remain, ready to flare up again when conditions change.
Rabbits are obligate nose breathers, which means they breathe exclusively through their nasal passages under normal circumstances. A rabbit will only resort to mouth breathing when their nasal passages are severely blocked or when they are in extreme respiratory distress. This anatomical fact makes upper respiratory infections particularly problematic for rabbits because nasal congestion directly impairs their ability to breathe comfortably, eat effectively, and smell their food - which is a major driver of appetite in rabbits.
Respiratory infections affect rabbits of all ages and breeds, though certain populations are more vulnerable. Young rabbits from pet stores or high-volume breeding operations frequently arrive with active respiratory infections picked up from crowded, stressful conditions. Older rabbits with declining immune function are more susceptible to flare-ups of latent infections. Lop-eared breeds may have slightly narrower nasal passages that make them more vulnerable to congestion. Rabbits housed in poorly ventilated spaces, exposed to dusty bedding, or living in environments with strong chemical fumes face elevated risk.

Mixed infections involving multiple bacteria are common, which is one reason why culture and sensitivity testing is so valuable for guiding antibiotic selection. What works against Pasteurella may not work against the Pseudomonas that is also present.
Stress is the most significant trigger that converts a quiet carrier state into an active infection. Moving to a new home, the loss of a bonded companion, a change in housing, a visit to the vet, the introduction of a new pet, or disruptions to routine can all suppress the immune system enough for dormant bacteria to multiply and cause symptoms. This is why respiratory symptoms often appear shortly after a major life change rather than seemingly out of nowhere.
Environmental factors play a huge role in respiratory health. Ammonia from urine-soaked bedding is one of the most damaging irritants to rabbit respiratory tissue. A litter box that is not cleaned frequently enough, bedding that retains moisture and odor, or inadequate ventilation in the rabbit's living space creates a constant chemical assault on the delicate nasal lining. Dusty bedding materials - particularly fine wood shavings, sawdust, and some brands of hay with excessive dust - irritate the airways and create microscopic damage that bacteria exploit.
Cedar and pine shavings deserve special mention because they contain aromatic oils called phenols that are directly toxic to rabbit respiratory tissue. These shavings are still sold in pet stores for small animal use, but they should never be used with rabbits. Even kiln-dried pine, which has reduced phenol content, is not the best choice. Paper-based bedding, fleece liners, or hay-based litter products are much safer options for the respiratory system.
Direct transmission between rabbits occurs through nasal secretions, shared water sources, and close contact. A rabbit with an active respiratory infection can spread bacteria to cage mates or bonded partners through grooming and nose-to-nose contact. In multi-rabbit households, an active infection in one rabbit often means monitoring all rabbits closely for developing symptoms. Breeding operations and rescue facilities where rabbits are housed in proximity face particular challenges with respiratory disease spreading through the population.
Section 3 Signs And Symptoms
Early signs of upper respiratory infection are often subtle enough that owners miss them initially. A slightly wet nose, occasional sneezing, or small amounts of clear discharge on the inside of the front paws where the rabbit wipes their face may be the first indications. Rabbits groom their faces constantly, so nasal discharge can be cleaned away before you notice it. The damp, matted fur on the inside of the front legs is sometimes the most visible clue because the discharge transfers there during face washing.
As the infection progresses, symptoms become more obvious. Nasal discharge may change from clear and watery to thick, white, yellow, or greenish, indicating the immune system is actively fighting the infection. Sneezing becomes more frequent and may produce visible droplets. The fur around the nose and on the front paws becomes increasingly matted and crusty from dried discharge. You may hear audible congestion - a snoring or rattling sound when the rabbit breathes - that was not present before. Some rabbits develop watery or mucoid eye discharge because the nasolacrimal duct that connects the eye to the nose becomes involved in the infection.
Lower respiratory involvement - meaning the infection has moved from the nasal passages down into the lungs - represents a significant escalation in severity. A rabbit with pneumonia or lower airway infection will often show increased breathing rate visible as rapid flank movement, labored breathing with more effort than normal, decreased activity and appetite, and possibly a bluish tint to the lips, gums, or ear margins indicating inadequate oxygen exchange. These rabbits often sit in a hunched position with their neck extended slightly forward to open their airway, and they may be reluctant to move.
Head tilt and ear infections can develop as complications of upper respiratory infections because the bacteria can travel from the nasal passages through the eustachian tube into the middle and inner ear. A rabbit who develops a sudden head tilt, loss of balance, circling, or rolling during a respiratory infection needs immediate veterinary attention because inner ear involvement can cause permanent damage if not treated aggressively.
Abscesses in the nasal passages, sinuses, tear ducts, or jaw can develop as chronic complications of respiratory infections, particularly Pasteurella infections. These abscesses may present as visible swelling on the face, persistent discharge from one eye or one nostril, a lump under the jaw, or difficulty eating due to pressure from a sinus abscess on the tooth roots. Rabbit abscesses are notoriously difficult to treat because the thick, caseous pus that rabbits produce does not drain well and often requires surgical removal rather than simple lancing and flushing.
Section 4 Diagnosis And Treatment
Veterinary diagnosis of respiratory infection begins with a thorough history and physical examination. Your vet will listen to the lungs with a stethoscope, checking for abnormal sounds like crackles, wheezes, or areas of decreased sound that might indicate fluid accumulation. They will examine the nasal passages, eyes, and ears for discharge, and palpate the head and jaw for swelling that might indicate abscesses. The information you provide about when symptoms started, whether they have progressed, and whether other rabbits in the household are affected helps guide the diagnostic approach.
Culture and sensitivity testing is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools for rabbit respiratory infections. A swab is taken from the nasal discharge and sent to a laboratory where the bacteria are grown and tested against a panel of antibiotics to determine which drugs will actually kill the specific bacteria present. This is important because Pasteurella strains vary in their antibiotic resistance, and guessing at an antibiotic without culture results often leads to ineffective treatment and wasted time while the infection progresses.
X-rays of the skull and chest provide information about the extent of disease. Skull X-rays can reveal sinus involvement, tooth root abscesses that may be contributing to nasal issues, and bony changes associated with chronic infection. Chest X-rays are essential when lower respiratory involvement is suspected, showing areas of consolidation in the lungs, fluid accumulation, or abscess formation. These images help your vet determine whether the infection is limited to the upper airways or has spread to the lungs.
Antibiotic treatment is the cornerstone of respiratory infection management. Commonly used antibiotics for rabbit respiratory infections include enrofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, azithromycin, and chloramphenicol. The choice depends on culture results when available, severity of disease, and the individual rabbit's tolerance. Treatment courses typically run two to four weeks minimum, and some chronic infections require longer courses or rotating antibiotics. Never give a rabbit amoxicillin or other penicillin-type antibiotics orally, as these can fatally disrupt the gut flora.
Nebulization therapy is sometimes used alongside oral antibiotics, particularly for rabbits with significant congestion or lower respiratory involvement. This involves placing the rabbit in an enclosed space with a nebulizer that produces a fine mist of saline or medication-infused solution that the rabbit breathes in, delivering medication directly to the airways. Your vet can set this up and teach you how to do it at home.
Abscesses related to chronic respiratory infection often require surgical intervention. The thick, cheesy pus that rabbits produce does not respond to lancing and draining the way dog or cat abscesses do. Complete surgical removal of the abscess capsule, along with extended antibiotic therapy and sometimes local antibiotic bead implantation, gives the best chance of resolution. Facial and jaw abscesses can be particularly challenging because of their proximity to tooth roots and important nerves.
Section 5 Home Care Prevention
Supporting a rabbit through a respiratory infection at home means keeping their environment clean, their airways as clear as possible, and their gut moving through consistent eating. Humidity helps loosen nasal congestion, so running a cool mist humidifier near your rabbit's living area can provide relief. Some owners bring their rabbit into the bathroom during a hot shower to let them breathe the steamy air for ten to fifteen minutes, which can help with particularly stubborn congestion.
Keep the living space impeccably clean during treatment. Change litter more frequently than usual, use a low-dust bedding material, and ensure good air circulation without direct drafts on the rabbit. Remove any scented products, air fresheners, candles, or cleaning chemicals from the area. The goal is air that is as clean and free of irritants as possible while the respiratory system heals.
Administering oral antibiotics to a rabbit takes some practice. Most rabbit antibiotics come in liquid form that you deliver via oral syringe. Approach calmly, gently restrain the rabbit wrapped in a towel if needed, and insert the syringe tip into the side of the mouth behind the front teeth. Give the medication slowly enough that the rabbit can swallow without choking. Follow the medication with a favorite treat to create a positive association. Give antibiotics for the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve before the medication runs out, because stopping early promotes antibiotic resistance.
Gently cleaning nasal discharge from your rabbit's face helps them breathe and eat more comfortably. Use a warm, damp cloth to soften and remove crusted discharge from around the nostrils and eyes. Do not force anything into the nostrils. If the fur is heavily matted with dried discharge, carefully trim the worst areas with blunt-nosed scissors. Keeping the face clean also prevents the discharge from irritating the skin underneath and causing secondary dermatitis.
Preventing respiratory infections long-term means managing the environmental triggers that allow latent bacteria to become active problems. Maintain excellent litter hygiene to minimize ammonia exposure. Use dust-free bedding and low-dust hay. Never use cedar or pine shavings. Ensure good ventilation without cold drafts. Minimize stress through consistent routines, appropriate companionship, and gentle handling. Keep new rabbits quarantined for at least two weeks before introducing them to your existing rabbits. A strong immune system maintained through proper diet, exercise, and low-stress living conditions is your rabbit's best defense against the bacteria that are likely already present in their system.
Section 6 When To See Vet
See your vet within a day or two if you notice nasal discharge that has changed from clear to white, yellow, or green, frequent sneezing that persists for more than a couple of days, matted or crusty fur on the front paws from face washing, or watery eye discharge that does not resolve on its own. These are signs of an active infection that will benefit from treatment and is unlikely to resolve without antibiotics.
Seek same-day or emergency veterinary care if your rabbit is breathing with their mouth open, has a noticeably elevated breathing rate with visible effort, shows blue-tinged lips or ears, develops a sudden head tilt or loss of balance, has stopped eating for more than twelve hours alongside respiratory symptoms, or is lethargic and unresponsive. These signs indicate that the infection has progressed beyond the upper airways or that complications have developed that require aggressive treatment.
Return to your vet if symptoms do not improve within the first week of antibiotic treatment or if symptoms improve and then worsen again after completing a course of antibiotics. Treatment failure usually means either the antibiotic chosen does not match the bacteria present, the infection has an abscess component that antibiotics alone cannot resolve, or there is a resistant bacterial strain that requires a different medication. Culture and sensitivity testing, if not done initially, should be performed at this point to guide the next treatment approach.
For rabbits with chronic or recurrent respiratory infections, regular veterinary monitoring becomes part of their ongoing care plan. Some rabbits live with low-grade chronic Pasteurella infections that flare up periodically and require intermittent treatment throughout their lives. Your vet can help you develop a management plan that includes recognizing early flare-up signs, having appropriate medications on hand, and knowing when a flare-up warrants a vet visit versus home management. The goal is keeping the infection controlled well enough that your rabbit maintains good quality of life, comfortable breathing, and a healthy appetite.
