This problem shows up across all breeds and ages, but certain rabbits face higher risk. Rex and Mini Rex rabbits are particularly vulnerable because their fur is shorter and denser, providing less cushioning on the foot pads. Large and giant breeds carry more weight on their feet, increasing pressure on the hock area. Overweight rabbits of any breed put extra stress on their feet with every hop. Rabbits housed on wire-bottom cages, hard surfaces without adequate padding, or damp bedding are essentially being set up for hock problems by their living conditions.

The severity of sore hocks ranges from mild thinning of the fur with slightly pink skin, which responds quickly to environmental changes, to deep ulceration with bone infection that may require long-term antibiotics and sometimes amputation. The early stages are easy to miss if you are not regularly checking your rabbit's feet, and the condition progresses steadily unless the causes are removed. Because rabbits bear most of their weight on their hind feet and do not have protective paw pads like dogs and cats, their feet are vulnerable in ways that other common pets are not.

Rabbits tend to tolerate discomfort without complaint, which means sore hocks can advance through several stages before an owner notices anything is wrong. A rabbit with painful feet may shift their weight slightly, spend more time lying down, or move a bit less enthusiastically, but these are subtle changes that blend into normal resting behavior. By the time a rabbit is obviously limping or refusing to move, the hocks have usually progressed well past the point where simple fixes would have resolved the problem.

Even carpet, while softer, can cause abrasion over time as the texture wears against the fur.

Moisture accelerates hock damage dramatically. Wet bedding from spilled water, urine-soaked litter that is not changed frequently enough, or generally damp housing conditions keep the skin on the feet softened and vulnerable. Softened skin breaks down faster under pressure and friction, and the damp environment creates ideal conditions for bacterial infection once the skin surface is compromised. Rabbits who sit in their own waste because the litter box is too small or not cleaned often enough are at particularly high risk.

Body weight is the second major controllable factor. Every extra ounce a rabbit carries translates directly to more pressure on the hock area with every step and every time they sit. Obese rabbits develop sore hocks at dramatically higher rates than rabbits maintained at healthy weight, and the hocks are harder to treat because the excess weight continues aggravating the damaged tissue throughout recovery. Weight management is both prevention and treatment when it comes to sore hocks.

Limited movement contributes to hock problems in ways that might seem counterintuitive. Rabbits who are confined to small spaces and cannot move around freely tend to sit in the same position for extended periods, concentrating pressure on the same spots on their feet. Rabbits with adequate space to hop, run, and shift positions throughout the day distribute pressure across different parts of their feet and give any stressed areas time to recover between loading periods.

Breed predisposition, as mentioned, plays a significant role. Rex-furred breeds have less fur cushioning by genetics, and no amount of environmental management completely eliminates their elevated risk, though it can be dramatically reduced. Giant breeds like Flemish Giants carry so much weight that even ideal flooring conditions require attention to keep hocks healthy. Older rabbits lose muscle mass and may develop arthritis that changes how they distribute weight, creating new pressure points on feet that were previously fine.

Section 3 Signs And Symptoms

Checking your rabbit's hocks regularly is the single most effective early detection strategy, and it takes about thirty seconds once you know what to look for. Gently turn your rabbit over or lift them to see the bottom of each hind foot, looking at the heel area where the foot contacts the ground during sitting. Knowing what healthy hocks look like gives you the baseline to spot changes early.

Stage one is fur thinning and mild redness. The fur on the heel area becomes noticeably thinner than the surrounding foot, and the skin underneath may look slightly pink or irritated. At this stage there is no open wound and no sign of infection. This is the ideal time to catch the problem because environmental changes alone - better flooring, clean dry bedding, weight management - can reverse it completely without veterinary intervention.

Stage two involves fur loss and callus formation. The fur is gone from the pressure area, leaving bare skin that has thickened and hardened into a callus. The callus may look dry and slightly cracked. The skin is not yet broken through, but it is significantly more vulnerable than normal fur-covered skin. Discomfort is increasing at this stage, and your rabbit may start shifting their weight or resting differently.

Stage three brings open sores. The skin has broken, creating an ulcer that may ooze clear fluid or blood. Scabbing forms over the wound but is repeatedly disrupted by the pressure of the rabbit's weight. Infection risk is now very high because bacteria have direct access to exposed tissue. The area around the sore may be swollen, warm, and tender. Your rabbit is in real pain at this point, and you should be working with your vet.

Stage four involves deep infection. Bacteria have penetrated through the skin into deeper tissues, potentially reaching the tendon sheaths and bone. The foot may be significantly swollen, hot to the touch, and your rabbit may refuse to put weight on it. Discharge from the wound may be thick, colored, or foul-smelling. This stage is a serious medical problem requiring aggressive veterinary treatment.

Behavioral clues that accompany hock progression include spending more time lying on one side, reluctance to hop or binky, shifting weight to the front feet while sitting, decreased activity, reduced appetite from chronic pain, and aggression or flinching when the feet are touched.

Section 4 Diagnosis And Treatment

Your vet diagnoses sore hocks through physical examination of the feet, assessing the stage of the condition and checking for signs of infection. In more advanced cases, they may recommend radiographs to determine whether infection has reached the bone, which significantly changes the treatment approach and prognosis. Culture and sensitivity testing of any wound discharge helps identify which bacteria are involved and which antibiotics will be most effective.

Early-stage treatment focuses entirely on removing the causes. Your vet will likely recommend changes to flooring, bedding, hygiene, and weight management rather than prescribing medications for stage one hocks. This is not dismissive - it reflects the reality that no medication fixes sore hocks if the rabbit goes back to the same conditions that caused them. Think of it as treating the environment rather than just the rabbit.

Moderate cases with open sores require wound care alongside environmental changes. Your vet may prescribe topical antibiotics or antiseptic wound treatments, padded bandaging to protect the sore from further pressure, and systemic pain medication to keep your rabbit comfortable and moving. Bandage changes at home become part of your routine, and keeping bandages clean and dry on a rabbit's foot is genuinely challenging since they walk through their litter box multiple times daily. Your vet can show you bandaging techniques that stay in place better than others.

Severe cases with deep infection require aggressive treatment that may include long courses of systemic antibiotics chosen based on culture results, surgical debridement of infected tissue, specialized wound management, and extended pain control. Some advanced cases do not heal despite aggressive treatment, particularly when bone infection is established, and amputation of the affected foot may ultimately be recommended. While this sounds drastic, rabbits adapt remarkably well to life with three legs.

Pain management throughout treatment is essential not just for comfort but for recovery. A rabbit in pain does not move, and a rabbit that does not move puts constant pressure on the same damaged spots. Adequate pain control encourages normal movement patterns that distribute weight across the foot and promote healing. Meloxicam is commonly prescribed, sometimes alongside additional pain medications for more severe cases.

Recovery timelines vary considerably depending on the stage at diagnosis. Stage one and two hocks may improve within a few weeks of environmental correction. Stage three sores often take months to heal fully, and recurrence is common if the original contributing factors are not thoroughly addressed. Stage four infections may require months of antibiotic therapy with no guarantee of complete resolution. Throughout recovery, follow-up vet visits to monitor healing progress and adjust treatment are important - what looks like improvement on the surface may mask ongoing problems underneath.

Section 5 Home Care Prevention

Flooring is where prevention starts and where it matters most. Every surface your rabbit spends time on should provide cushioning, traction, and dryness. Soft fleece or padded mats over solid floors work well for indoor rabbits, with the understanding that they need regular washing to stay clean and dry. Thick layers of clean hay or straw over solid surfaces provide excellent natural cushioning for hutch rabbits. Avoid bare wire, bare plastic, and bare hard floors entirely.

Bedding and litter management directly affect hock health. Use absorbent bedding in the litter box and change it frequently enough that your rabbit is never sitting on wet material. Paper-based bedding and kiln-dried pine shavings both absorb well. Check resting areas daily for dampness from water bowls or urine and replace wet bedding immediately. Dry feet resist sore hocks far better than damp feet.

Weight management is the other critical prevention pillar. Feed unlimited hay, measured pellets appropriate for your rabbit's size and age, and moderate fresh greens. Treats should be occasional, not daily. Weigh your rabbit regularly and talk to your vet about ideal weight for their breed and build. If your rabbit needs to lose weight, the approach is gradual - never restrict hay, but reduce pellets and high-calorie treats while increasing exercise opportunities.

Exercise space keeps feet healthy by encouraging movement that distributes weight across different parts of the foot throughout the day. A rabbit confined to a small cage sits in the same position for hours, loading the same spots on their hocks continuously. Providing at least several hours daily of exercise in a larger area, and ideally giving your rabbit a living space large enough for hopping and running at all times, dramatically reduces hock pressure.

Regular foot checks catch problems at stage one when they are easiest to fix. Make checking the hocks part of your weekly routine - pick up your rabbit, look at each hind foot, and note any fur thinning, redness, or skin changes. For Rex breeds, giant breeds, and overweight rabbits, check more frequently. Catching thinning fur early and immediately improving flooring conditions often prevents the problem from ever progressing beyond that first mild stage.

Section 6 When To See Vet

Schedule a vet visit if you find open sores on your rabbit's hocks, if the skin is broken and bleeding or oozing, if there is noticeable swelling or heat in the foot, or if your rabbit is limping or avoiding putting weight on one or both hind feet. These signs indicate the condition has progressed beyond what environmental changes alone can fix and your rabbit needs medical treatment to prevent further deterioration.

Seek urgent care if the foot is severely swollen, if discharge from the wound is discolored or foul-smelling, if your rabbit has stopped eating or shows signs of pain like teeth grinding and hunched posture, or if the sore has appeared or worsened rapidly. Deep infection can progress quickly and delaying treatment risks the infection reaching bone.

For early-stage hocks with fur thinning but no broken skin, you can begin environmental improvements immediately and bring it up at your rabbit's next scheduled vet visit. If the thinning does not improve or progresses despite better flooring and dry bedding, move the vet visit up.

A rabbit-savvy vet is particularly important for sore hock cases because treatment decisions depend on accurate staging of the condition and knowledge of which approaches work best in rabbits specifically. The bandaging techniques, antibiotic choices, and pain management protocols that work for rabbit feet are different from those used for dogs and cats.
