Rabbits have open-rooted teeth that grow continuously throughout their lives, and the incisors - those prominent front teeth you see when your rabbit yawns - are designed to be worn down through constant chewing on fibrous material. When that natural wear process fails, the incisors keep growing until they curve, splay outward, or even grow back into the mouth and face, causing pain, infection, and an inability to eat.

This problem is common in pet rabbits, and it tends to show up in two main populations. The first group includes dwarf and brachycephalic breeds like Netherland Dwarfs and Holland Lops whose shortened skull structure creates misaligned jaws where the top and bottom incisors do not meet properly. The second group includes rabbits of any breed who are not eating enough hay and fibrous material to keep natural wear happening. Any age rabbit can be affected, though genetic malocclusion typically becomes apparent in young rabbits while diet-related overgrowth develops more gradually.

The severity ranges from mildly long incisors that need a trim to severely overgrown teeth that have curled into spirals, punctured the lips or palate, and left the rabbit unable to eat at all. Even at the mild end, overgrown incisors cause discomfort and difficulty grasping food. At the severe end, this is a condition that can become life-threatening because a rabbit who cannot eat will develop GI stasis within hours, and starvation and dehydration follow quickly.

Rabbits are particularly vulnerable to dental problems because their entire digestive health depends on constant food intake, and their teeth are central to that process. A rabbit with overgrown incisors cannot pick up hay properly, cannot bite into fresh greens, and may stop eating altogether even though they are hungry. Because rabbits mask pain, you might not realize the teeth are the problem until your rabbit has already lost significant weight.

This article explains why incisors overgrow, what signs to watch for, how your vet can address the problem, and what you can do at home to support your rabbit's dental health. If your rabbit's front teeth look longer than they should or seem to be growing at odd angles, this is information you need.

The most common cause of overgrown incisors is malocclusion, which means the upper and lower teeth do not align properly and therefore cannot wear against each other the way they are supposed to. In a rabbit with normal occlusion, the top incisors rest just in front of the bottom incisors, and every time the rabbit chews, the teeth grind against each other and maintain their correct length. When the jaw is too short, too long, or slightly offset, the teeth miss each other during chewing and grow unchecked. Malocclusion can be genetic, meaning the rabbit was born with skull proportions that make proper alignment impossible, or it can be acquired through trauma to the jaw or face.

Diet is the other major factor. Even rabbits with perfect jaw alignment can develop overgrown incisors if they are not eating enough abrasive material to wear the teeth down. Hay is the single most important food for dental health in rabbits because the constant side-to-side grinding motion of chewing long-strand hay is what keeps both incisors and molars at the correct length. A rabbit eating primarily pellets does not perform this grinding motion nearly as much, and the soft texture of pellets does not provide the abrasive wear that teeth need.

Breed is a significant risk factor that you should be aware of before bringing a rabbit home. Dwarf breeds and lop-eared breeds are genetically predisposed to dental problems because selective breeding for flat faces and compact skulls has altered their jaw structure. Netherland Dwarfs, Holland Lops, Mini Lops, and Lionheads are among the breeds most frequently affected. This does not mean every rabbit of these breeds will have problems, but it does mean that dental monitoring should be a regular part of their care.

Trauma to the face or jaw can cause malocclusion in rabbits who previously had normal teeth. A rabbit who falls from a height, gets their head caught in cage wire, or sustains a blow to the face can damage the tooth roots or jaw bone in ways that permanently alter how the teeth grow. Even seemingly minor injuries can shift the alignment enough to cause progressive overgrowth over time.

Age plays a role in the sense that older rabbits are more likely to have developed dental issues either from cumulative wear patterns or from age-related changes in jaw structure. However, genetic malocclusion typically shows up early, often within the first year of life. If your rabbit's incisors are growing unevenly or seem too long by six to twelve months of age, genetic malocclusion is the most likely explanation.

Section 3 Signs And Symptoms

The most obvious early sign of overgrown incisors is visible tooth length. You can see a rabbit's incisors fairly easily when they yawn, groom, or eat. Healthy incisors should be relatively short, white, and evenly aligned with a slight chisel shape. If the teeth look noticeably long, are curving inward or outward, are growing at uneven lengths, or have visible cracks or discoloration, something is wrong. Getting in the habit of checking your rabbit's front teeth every week or two catches problems before they become serious.

Eating difficulties are often the first behavioral sign owners notice. Your rabbit may approach food eagerly but then struggle to pick it up, drop food repeatedly, or chew only on one side of the mouth. Hay strands may fall out of the mouth during chewing. Some rabbits shift to eating only soft foods like pellets or fresh greens because they can manage those without needing to bite through tough material. A rabbit who used to eat hay enthusiastically and has gradually stopped is showing you a dental problem even if they are still eating other foods.

Weight loss follows when eating becomes difficult enough that your rabbit is not consuming enough calories. This can happen gradually over weeks or suddenly if the teeth reach a point where eating becomes too painful. You might notice your rabbit's spine and hip bones becoming more prominent, or their fur may look rough and unkempt because poor nutrition affects coat quality. Droppings often become smaller and fewer in number as food intake decreases.

Drooling and a wet chin or chest are classic signs of dental problems in rabbits. When the incisors are overgrown or misaligned, saliva that would normally be managed during chewing escapes the mouth and saturates the fur around the chin and down the front of the chest. This wet fur can lead to skin irritation and infection, creating a secondary problem on top of the dental issue. If you notice your rabbit's chin is consistently damp or the fur there is matted, check the incisors immediately.

In severe cases where incisors have grown dramatically, the teeth may curve and puncture the lips, gums, or roof of the mouth. This causes obvious pain - the rabbit may grind their teeth audibly, sit hunched and reluctant to move, or stop eating entirely. A rabbit who has completely stopped eating is in a dangerous situation because GI stasis can develop within twelve to twenty-four hours. If you see dramatically overgrown teeth accompanied by a refusal to eat, this is an emergency that needs same-day veterinary care.

Section 4 Diagnosis And Treatment

Diagnosing overgrown incisors is usually straightforward because the front teeth are visible during a basic oral examination. Your vet will look at the length, alignment, and condition of the incisors and assess how the upper and lower teeth meet when the mouth is closed. They will also check for damage to the lips or gums caused by teeth growing into soft tissue. What is less visible but equally important is the condition of the back teeth, because incisor problems are often accompanied by molar overgrowth that requires a more thorough examination.

Your vet may recommend skull X-rays to evaluate the tooth roots, jaw alignment, and overall dental architecture. This is particularly important for determining whether the malocclusion is genetic and permanent versus acquired and potentially correctable. X-rays reveal problems below the gum line that visual examination cannot detect, including tooth root abscesses, bone loss, and the angle at which teeth are growing. This information guides the treatment approach and helps set realistic expectations about long-term management.

The standard treatment for overgrown incisors is trimming, and it needs to be done correctly. Your vet will use a high-speed dental burr to carefully reduce the tooth length to an appropriate level. The old practice of clipping incisors with nail trimmers or wire cutters should be avoided completely because it can crack the teeth, split them vertically down to the root, and cause painful fractures that lead to infection. Proper burring creates a smooth, even surface and preserves tooth integrity.

Pain management is important because dental work in rabbits involves sensitive tissue. Your vet may provide pain relief before and after the procedure, especially if the overgrown teeth have caused sores or tissue damage. A rabbit in less pain eats sooner, and eating is always the priority.

For rabbits with genetic malocclusion where the teeth will never wear normally on their own, there are two long-term options. The first is regular incisor trims every four to eight weeks for life, which keeps the teeth at a functional length but requires ongoing veterinary visits and expense. The second option is incisor extraction, where the front teeth are permanently removed. This sounds drastic, but rabbits adapt remarkably well to life without incisors. They learn to use their lips and tongue to pick up food, and many owners report that their rabbit's quality of life improves dramatically once the constant cycle of overgrowth and trimming ends.

Recovery from a routine incisor trim is immediate - most rabbits eat within hours. Recovery from incisor extraction takes a bit longer, usually one to two weeks for the extraction sites to heal, during which your rabbit may need soft foods and syringe feeding support. Once healed, rabbits without incisors manage very well and typically eat hay, greens, and pellets without difficulty.

Section 5 Home Care Prevention

If your rabbit has just had an incisor trim, the best thing you can do at home is make sure hay is available immediately and encourage eating as soon as possible. Offer fresh, fragrant hay in generous amounts along with your rabbit's favorite greens to stimulate appetite. Most rabbits bounce back from a trim very quickly and are eating normally within hours. If your rabbit had an extraction, follow your vet's instructions carefully regarding soft foods and syringe feeding during the healing period, and keep the living area clean to prevent infection at the extraction sites.

Medication after dental work is usually limited to pain relief for a day or two, given as a liquid by syringe. If your rabbit had an extraction or if there was any infection present, antibiotics may also be prescribed. Give all medications as directed and watch for signs that your rabbit is not recovering as expected, including continued refusal to eat beyond the first day or visible swelling around the mouth.

Prevention of diet-related incisor overgrowth comes down to one thing - hay, hay, and more hay. Unlimited timothy hay or other grass hay should be the absolute foundation of your rabbit's diet. The constant grinding motion of chewing long-strand hay is what keeps teeth worn to proper length. Pellets, while nutritionally useful in small amounts, do not provide the same dental wear and should not be the primary food source. Chew toys made of untreated wood, willow sticks, and hay-based toys also contribute to dental wear and give your rabbit something productive to gnaw on.

Regular monitoring means checking your rabbit's incisors every week or two by gently lifting the lips to get a clear view of the front teeth. Look at the length, the alignment, and whether both top and bottom teeth appear even and symmetrical. Get familiar with what your rabbit's normal teeth look like so that changes are obvious. Also watch for the behavioral signs discussed earlier - changes in eating patterns, food dropping, drooling, or weight loss.

For rabbits with genetic malocclusion requiring ongoing trims, long-term management means establishing a regular schedule with your vet and sticking to it. Most rabbits on a trim cycle need to come in every four to eight weeks depending on how fast their teeth grow. Do not try to stretch the interval too long because allowing the teeth to overgrow between visits is uncomfortable for your rabbit and can cause the secondary problems you are trying to prevent. If the trim cycle feels unsustainable, talk to your vet about whether incisor extraction might be a better long-term solution for your rabbit's quality of life.

Section 6 When To See Vet

Get your rabbit to a vet the same day if they have stopped eating entirely and you can see that their incisors are dramatically overgrown, curving into the lips, or growing at severe angles. A rabbit who cannot eat will develop GI stasis rapidly, and the combination of dental pain and gut shutdown is dangerous. Also seek immediate care if you notice bleeding from the mouth, visible tooth fractures, or significant facial swelling that could indicate an abscess at the tooth root.

Schedule a vet visit soon if you notice your rabbit's incisors are getting longer than normal, if they seem to be having difficulty picking up or chewing food, if you see drooling or a wet chin, or if your rabbit's eating patterns have changed in ways that concern you. These signs suggest the teeth need attention but are not yet at emergency level. Catching incisor overgrowth early means a simple trim rather than dealing with complications from teeth that have been growing unchecked for weeks.

A rabbit-savvy vet with dental experience is important for this issue because proper technique matters. A vet who uses a dental burr rather than clippers, who checks the molars alongside the incisors, and who can take and interpret dental X-rays is going to provide much better care than someone who only occasionally sees rabbits. If your rabbit has genetic malocclusion, you will be seeing this vet regularly, so finding someone experienced and comfortable with rabbit dentistry is a worthwhile investment.

If you have a dwarf or lop breed and have never had their teeth checked, schedule a dental evaluation even if you have not noticed any problems yet. Early detection of malocclusion allows you to establish a management plan before the teeth cause pain or eating difficulty. Your rabbit cannot tell you their teeth hurt, but your vet can see it.
