Rabbits evolved as burrowing animals that spend the hottest parts of the day underground where temperatures stay cool and stable. They are built for cold tolerance, not heat tolerance. Their dense fur acts as insulation that works against them in warm conditions, and their compact body mass heats up faster than it cools down. Once heat stroke begins, it triggers a cascade of organ failure that becomes irreversible very quickly.

Certain rabbits face even higher risk than others. The earliest signs of heat stress, before it becomes full heat stroke, include rapid breathing with nostrils flaring visibly, ears that feel hot to the touch and appear deeply flushed with engorged blood vessels, and a rabbit that stretches out flat on its side or belly trying to maximize contact with cool surfaces. You may notice your rabbit breathing with its mouth slightly open, which is abnormal for rabbits and always a sign of significant distress. Drooling or a wet chin that was not there before is another early signal that the body is struggling to cope.

As heat stroke progresses, the signs become more alarming. Your rabbit may become lethargic and unresponsive, lying limply without reacting to your voice or touch the way it normally would. The ears may actually stop feeling hot and begin to feel cool or clammy, which is a worse sign than hot ears because it means circulation is shutting down. The gums and mucous membranes may turn from their normal pink to pale, gray, or bluish. You may see trembling, uncoordinated movement, or a head tilt as the brain begins to swell from the heat.

Behavioral changes in the early stages might be your only warning if you are paying attention. A rabbit that normally comes to greet you but stays flattened in its pen is telling you something. A rabbit that stops eating hay on a warm afternoon when it normally grazes steadily is signaling discomfort. Reduced droppings on a hot day are a red flag because they indicate reduced gut motility triggered by heat stress. Some rabbits become unusually restless before progressing to lethargy, pacing or repositioning repeatedly as they try to find a cooler spot.

Droppings and elimination changes during heat stress reflect the body diverting blood flow away from the digestive system toward the skin surface for cooling. You may notice smaller, harder droppings, fewer droppings overall, or no droppings at all. Urine may appear darker and more concentrated as the body conserves water. These changes can trigger secondary GI stasis, which complicates the picture further because now you are dealing with two emergencies at once.

Convulsions, complete collapse, unconsciousness, and a body temperature above 106 degrees are signs of terminal heat stroke. At this point the organs are shutting down and the prognosis is extremely poor even with immediate veterinary intervention. Pain management and anti-inflammatory medications support recovery by addressing the widespread tissue inflammation that heat stroke causes. Your vet may also prescribe gut motility drugs if the digestive system has slowed down, since GI stasis following heat stroke is common and can become its own life-threatening complication if left untreated. Antibiotics may be warranted if the intestinal barrier has been compromised by reduced blood flow, allowing bacteria to enter the bloodstream.

Hospitalization is usually recommended for moderate to severe heat stroke because the rabbit needs continued monitoring, fluid support, and temperature checks over the following twelve to twenty-four hours. The first day after heat stroke is critical because organ damage can worsen even after body temperature returns to normal. Some rabbits appear to recover initially only to decline as kidney or liver failure becomes apparent over the next few days.

Recovery depends heavily on how quickly treatment began and how high the body temperature rose. Rabbits caught in early heat stress and cooled promptly often recover fully within a day or two. Rabbits whose temperature exceeded 106 degrees or who experienced convulsions face a guarded prognosis, and some sustain permanent organ damage even if they survive the acute episode.

Prevention is the entire strategy with heat stroke because treatment outcomes are unpredictable even with the best veterinary care. The single most important thing you can do is ensure your rabbit lives in a temperature-controlled environment during warm months. Air conditioning is not a luxury for pet rabbits. It is a medical necessity in any climate where summer temperatures regularly exceed 80 degrees. If your home does not have central air, a window unit in the rabbit's room is a worthwhile investment that could save their life.

For power outages or air conditioning failures, have a backup plan ready. Frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel placed in the enclosure give your rabbit something cool to lean against. Ceramic tiles or marble slabs stored in the freezer can be rotated into the pen as cooling stations. A battery-powered fan provides air circulation when electricity is out.
