It is, by definition, a last-resort measure that applies only in the most extreme circumstances, and being honest about its limitations is important before we discuss the technique itself. The success rate for CPR in rabbits is low even when performed by veterinary professionals in a clinic setting, and it is significantly lower when attempted at home by an owner without medical training. That said, knowing the basics can give your rabbit a fighting chance in a situation where doing nothing guarantees the worst outcome.

Most rabbit owners will never need to perform CPR, and that is a good thing. The situations that lead to cardiac or respiratory arrest in rabbits are themselves uncommon in well-cared-for pets. Severe trauma, anesthetic complications during surgery, extreme heatstroke, choking, drowning, or the final stages of a critical illness are the scenarios where CPR might become relevant. Understanding what those emergency situations look like and how to respond in the moment is more valuable than memorizing a technique you may never use, because the seconds you spend recognizing what is happening are the seconds that determine whether intervention is even possible.

Rabbits are physiologically fragile compared to dogs and cats. They have delicate rib cages that can fracture under compression, small lungs that are easily over-inflated, and hearts that are proportionally small for their body size. These physical characteristics make performing CPR on a rabbit more technically challenging and more likely to cause secondary injuries than performing it on a larger animal. This is not meant to discourage you from trying in a genuine emergency but rather to set appropriate expectations about what CPR can and cannot accomplish with an animal this small and this fragile.

The goal of rabbit CPR is to maintain some level of blood circulation and oxygen delivery to the brain and vital organs until veterinary care can take over. It is a bridge measure, not a cure. Even if you successfully restart a rabbit's heart or breathing through CPR, the underlying cause of the arrest still needs to be identified and treated by a veterinarian. A rabbit who has been resuscitated needs immediate emergency veterinary care regardless of how well they appear to be recovering.

Rabbits have unusual respiratory anatomy and metabolism, and certain anesthetic agents affect them differently. Choosing a rabbit-savvy vet who uses safe anesthetic protocols with proper monitoring equipment significantly reduces this risk, but it is never zero.

Heatstroke is a preventable cause of cardiac arrest that claims rabbit lives every summer. Rabbits cannot sweat and have limited ability to pant effectively, making them extremely vulnerable to overheating. A rabbit left in direct sunlight, a car, or an unventilated room on a hot day can progress from heat stress to organ failure and cardiac arrest within an hour. Temperatures above eighty-five degrees Fahrenheit become dangerous for rabbits, and humid heat is even worse because it impairs their ability to cool through ear vasodilation.

Severe shock from trauma, blood loss, or extreme fright can cause a rabbit's cardiovascular system to collapse. Rabbits are capable of literally dying from fear because a massive stress response can trigger fatal cardiac arrhythmias. Attacks by predators, even unsuccessful ones where the rabbit is not physically injured, can cause death from shock. Falls, being stepped on, or being dropped can cause internal injuries leading to cardiac arrest. These events highlight why careful handling and predator-proof housing are genuine safety requirements rather than optional precautions.

Respiratory arrest, where breathing stops before the heart does, can result from choking, severe respiratory infections, allergic reactions, or toxic exposure. Rabbits are obligate nasal breathers, meaning they breathe almost exclusively through their nose, so nasal blockage is more dangerous for them than for animals that can easily switch to mouth breathing. Severe upper respiratory infections that produce enough mucus to obstruct nasal passages can lead to respiratory distress and, if not addressed, respiratory arrest.

Pre-existing heart conditions, while not always diagnosed during a rabbit's life, can predispose rabbits to sudden cardiac arrest. Older rabbits and certain breeds may have underlying cardiomyopathy or valvular disease that was never detected because routine cardiac screening is not standard in rabbit medicine. A rabbit with an undiagnosed heart condition may arrest during a period of stress, exertion, or illness that a healthy heart would have tolerated without issue.

Section 3 Signs And Symptoms

Recognizing cardiac or respiratory arrest quickly is the most critical factor because every second without intervention reduces the already slim chances of successful resuscitation. A rabbit in cardiac arrest will be completely limp, unresponsive to touch or sound, and will have no detectable heartbeat. Their eyes will typically be open and fixed, with dilated pupils that do not respond to light. The gums and inner lips, if you can check them, will be pale gray, blue, or white rather than their normal pink. There will be no breathing movements visible in the chest or flanks.

Respiratory arrest may precede cardiac arrest, giving you a narrow window to intervene before the heart stops. A rabbit whose breathing has stopped will show no chest movement, no nostril flaring, and no air flow from the nose when you hold your hand or a piece of tissue near their nostrils. However, the heart may still be beating for a brief time after breathing stops. You can check for a heartbeat by placing your fingers gently on the left side of the chest just behind the elbow. If you feel a heartbeat but see no breathing, the situation requires rescue breathing rather than full CPR.

Before assuming the worst, quickly rule out fainting or extreme shock, which can look similar to arrest but have a better prognosis. A rabbit that has fainted from shock may be limp and unresponsive but will typically still have a faint heartbeat and shallow breathing. Gently pinch the ear or touch the corner of the eye. A living rabbit, even one in deep shock, will usually produce a faint flinch response. Complete absence of any response to these stimuli alongside no heartbeat and no breathing confirms arrest.

The signs leading up to an arrest event often happen rapidly and may include sudden collapse, gasping or agonal breathing which consists of irregular, labored gasps that are not effective breathing, blue-tinged ears and lips, and loss of muscle tone. If you witness these signs in progression, do not wait for complete arrest to start heading to the vet. Wrap your rabbit gently, keep them warm, and get in the car immediately while monitoring their condition.

It is important to be honest with yourself about what you are seeing. A rabbit who has been dead for more than a few minutes, whose body temperature has dropped noticeably, or who shows signs of rigor will not respond to CPR. Attempting resuscitation on a rabbit who has clearly passed is traumatic for you and serves no medical purpose. If you are uncertain, a brief attempt at CPR while someone calls the emergency vet for guidance is reasonable, but accepting when the effort is futile is also a form of caring for yourself during a terrible moment.

Section 4 Diagnosis And Treatment

If you determine that your rabbit is in cardiac or respiratory arrest and veterinary care is not immediately available, the basic technique for rabbit CPR involves chest compressions and rescue breathing performed on a very small scale. Lay your rabbit on their right side on a firm, flat surface. Place two fingers over the heart, which is located on the left side of the chest just behind the point of the elbow. Compress the chest approximately half an inch to three-quarters of an inch deep at a rate of roughly one hundred to one hundred and twenty compressions per minute. This is fast, roughly two compressions per second, and the depth is much shallower than what you would use for a human or a dog.

Rescue breathing for a rabbit involves closing the rabbit's mouth with your hand, creating a seal over the rabbit's nose with your lips, and delivering gentle breaths at a rate of one breath every three to five seconds. The breaths must be very gentle because rabbit lungs are small and fragile, and over-inflation can cause a pneumothorax, which is a collapsed lung that makes the situation dramatically worse. You should see the chest rise slightly with each breath. If you are inflating hard enough to see dramatic chest movement, you are using too much force.

The ratio commonly recommended is thirty compressions to two breaths, similar to human CPR guidelines. After thirty rapid chest compressions, pause to deliver two gentle breaths, then immediately resume compressions. Continue this cycle without stopping to check for a heartbeat until you reach veterinary care or until you have been performing CPR for at least ten to fifteen minutes without any response, at which point the likelihood of successful resuscitation is extremely low.

If your rabbit responds to CPR by resuming breathing or showing signs of a heartbeat, do not stop monitoring them. Keep them warm by wrapping them loosely in a towel, keep them calm and quiet, and transport them to an emergency vet immediately. A rabbit who has been resuscitated is in critical condition and needs professional assessment of whatever caused the arrest in the first place, as well as monitoring for secondary complications like organ damage from the period without adequate circulation.

In a veterinary setting, CPR includes drug administration such as epinephrine, advanced airway management with intubation, intravenous fluid support, and continuous monitoring with equipment that can detect heart rhythms and oxygen levels. The success rate improves in a clinical environment compared to home attempts, which is why getting to a vet as fast as possible remains the priority. If you have someone with you during the emergency, one person should drive while the other continues CPR in the vehicle if needed.

Be prepared for the reality that CPR attempts often do not succeed, even when performed correctly. The underlying causes of cardiac arrest in rabbits are frequently severe enough that resuscitation alone cannot reverse them. If your rabbit does not respond despite your best efforts, know that you did everything within your ability. The outcome reflects the severity of the medical event, not the quality of your effort.

Section 5 Home Care Prevention

The most important thing you can do regarding rabbit CPR is take steps to prevent ever needing it. Prevention is far more effective than intervention with a procedure that has low success rates even under ideal conditions. Start by managing heat exposure carefully. Keep your rabbit's living area below eighty degrees Fahrenheit, provide frozen water bottles or ceramic tiles for cooling during summer, ensure good ventilation, and never leave a rabbit in a car or enclosed sunroom where temperatures can spike rapidly.

Predator-proof your rabbit's enclosure thoroughly, whether they live indoors or outdoors. Dogs, cats, foxes, hawks, raccoons, and even ferrets can attack through inadequate fencing or enclosure gaps. Even if a predator cannot physically reach your rabbit, the sight, sound, or smell of a predator nearby can cause fatal stress responses in some rabbits. Indoor rabbits should be supervised around dogs and cats, and outdoor enclosures should have secure locks, buried wire to prevent digging, and covers to prevent aerial predator access.

Choose your veterinarian carefully, especially for any procedure requiring anesthesia. Ask about their experience with rabbit anesthesia specifically, what monitoring equipment they use during procedures, and what anesthetic protocols they follow. Isoflurane or sevoflurane gas anesthesia with proper pre-anesthetic assessment and continuous monitoring of heart rate, oxygen levels, and temperature represents the current standard of care for rabbit surgery. A vet who is cavalier about rabbit anesthesia risk is not the right vet for your rabbit.

Keep an emergency vet contact readily available at all times. Know where the nearest emergency exotic animal hospital is and how to get there quickly. Program the phone number into your contacts so you can call while in transit. Having a small emergency kit with a towel for wrapping, a carrier ready to go, and your rabbit's medical records easily accessible saves precious time during a crisis.

Consider taking a pet first aid course if one is available in your area. While these courses typically focus on dogs and cats, the basic principles of assessing an unresponsive animal, performing CPR on small animals, and managing emergencies until veterinary care is available translate to rabbit care. Some rabbit rescue organizations and exotic vet clinics offer species-specific first aid workshops that cover rabbit-appropriate techniques. Knowing what to do before the emergency happens replaces panic with purposeful action.

Section 6 When To See Vet

Any situation that could lead to cardiac or respiratory arrest requires immediate emergency veterinary care. If your rabbit has collapsed and is unresponsive, if they are gasping or showing agonal breathing, if their gums have turned blue or white, or if you cannot detect a heartbeat, call the emergency vet while you begin transport. Time is the most critical factor. Do not spend more than a few seconds assessing before you start moving toward the car. You can continue evaluating and performing CPR during transport if someone else is driving.

If your rabbit has been resuscitated after an arrest event, they need emergency veterinary care regardless of how well they seem to be recovering. Organ damage from even brief periods without adequate circulation can manifest hours later, and the underlying cause of the arrest needs to be identified and treated. A rabbit who appears to recover fully after CPR and then is left unmonitored at home is at high risk of a second arrest.

Situations that have not reached arrest but are heading in that direction also require emergency care. A rabbit with severe heatstroke who is panting and drooling, a rabbit who has been attacked by a predator even without visible wounds, a rabbit choking on food or a foreign object, and a rabbit showing signs of severe allergic reaction all need to be seen immediately rather than monitored at home.
